A supremely delicious absinthe from Ableforth's. This fine spirit is made by macerating a selection of superb botanicals in English wheat spirit. These botanicals include traditional fare such as Artemisia Absinthium (Grand Wormwood, from which this spirit gets its name), Aniseed, Fennel and Liquorice, and a select blend of contemporary ingredients including Coriander Seed, Fresh Lemon Peel, and Bitter Orange Peel. After the ingredients have been allowed to macerate, the spirit is cold-distilled in a vacuum still (producing a crystal clear distillate).
This extraordinary vacuum still technique allows the liquid in this most marvellous contraption to boil at no more than room temperature, retaining all the freshness and extraordinary vibrancy of the botanicals used in its preparation. You won't get much (if any) louche effect here, but this is an excellent and surprisingly approachable absinthe given that it's bottled at a jaw-dropping 91.2% abv!
Nose: Very light and fresh. The lemon, aniseed and fennel are present, but in a completely new, fresh way. The cold-distillation clearly plays a huge role here. ABV is huge.
Palate: A veritable explosion of flavour. None of the 'cooked' flavour, but rather extreme, almost minty summer freshness. Anise is well controlled, allowing the other botanicals to appear in their own right.
Finish: Long and lingering, but with freshness still the watchword.

For those concerned about the lack of Louche - it says this loud and proud above. It's really not a normal absinthe - closer to a flavoured vodka, but the freshness and delciousness of this is totally unique.

PRO'S, IT'S A NICE BOTTLE.CON'S, NO LOUCHE EQUALS NO OIL , NO LOUCHE EQUALS NO FUN WHEN WATER ADDED, I LIKE THE CLOUDING EFFECT OK !!.EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT IT IS.WEAK TASTE DUE TO COLD DISTILLED, WELL I SUSPECT THAT'S THE CAUSE OF MY DISAPPOINTMENT.IT DOSEN'T COME ACROSS AS HAVING A VERY HIGH ABV.THE CHOICE IS YOUR'S AND IT'S A GREAT JOB IF YOU LIKE THIS ABSINTHE. WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES AND PALATE'S.ME, I'LL JUST STICK TO THE JADE ABSINTHE'S.

I AM VERY UNDERWHELMED WITH THIS ABSINTHE, MY PREVIOUS REVIEW WAS VERY POSSITIVE THOUGH, I FIND THE FINNISH SHORT, LACKING IN FLAVOUR,PLUS THE LACK OF LOUCHE MAKES THIS RATHER ORDINARY TIPPLE.

Yeah - you're absolutely right - there's virtually no louche at all given the fact that it's cold-distilled (despite the fact that actually a ludicrous amount of botanicals are used. I'm very close to 100% confident that we use more than anyone else in the world). We're not aiming to compete with the hot-distilled super-intense absinthes that are out there, and we think the cold-distillation brings out a lot of the more gentle, complex flavours in the botanicals. We see this as a positive point of difference rather than a failure, but if you're really unhappy with the product we'd be more than happy to take it back and issue a refund?More information on the inception of this product is available in the blog post here: http://www.masterofmalt.com/Blog/post/Cold-Distilled-Absinthe.aspx

Very powerful, and instant chest warmer. Gentle flavor to be appreciated. I have mine straight as I always prefer spirits this way. Nice aftertaste as well IMO. Great product to be careful with. Will buy again in the future. :-)

Very light on flavour, little more than neurtal spirit to my mind. No louche whatsoever even at 1 to 5 of water. To me it seemes the oils in the herbs and seeds just do not distill over at these low temperatures, that or he has really skimped on them...

YOU WOULD HAVE A JOB DRINKING ANY MALT WHISKY OVER 60% ABV. WITHOUT A LITTLE WATER.THIS ABSITHE IS SO SUBTLE I FOUND THAT I COULD DRINK IT WITHOUT WATER, SOMEHOW IT'S ABLE TO CONCEAL THE ULTRA HIGH ABV I ADDED WATER AT ABOUT 50/50 TO 2CL's AND FOUND THE TASTE RATHER DILUTED FROM THE PREVIOUS NEAT VERSION.HOWEVER I CAME OVER REALLY HOT AND VERY HAPPY " IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN ".LOOK WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES AND ALCOHOL TOLLERANCES, IT HIT ME ABOUT 5 MINUTES AFTER CONSUPTION, A DRINK TO BE ENJOYED AND IN MY CASE, TO BE VERY MUCH RESPECTED !!!!

Stong in alcohol but has a very nice soft taste. No too bitter or too much anise, nice and balanced. Not a cheap bottle but as you are not going to drink it pure it will last fairly long.

We sell this behind our bar and once people get their heads around the fact that something that strong can actually taste great, they always come back for more.
2nd December 2013
But strong. You have to taste some of it neat but mixing it with sugar and water gives it a sweet/sour taste. You can really taste anise seed like flavours which makes it taste like a stronger sambuca. A hit at my friends 21st!

...but very tasteful, when you get the water balance right (though you must have a tiny taste of it pure). Herbal, powerful and recommended, if a tad pricey (for 50cl). x

This is the frshest and lightest tasting absinthe I've ever tried. Very different to any others (less bitter) but nice.
