Welsh Gin

The delightful world of Welsh gin has never been healthier. Wales has not been excluded from the gin zeitgeist and a host of new distilleries have opened in recent years. In 2012 there was just one distillery in Wales - Penderyn, but figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) showed the number of distilleries in Wales has jumped from six in 2014 to 17 today, with four new distilleries opening in 2017 alone. With an appreciation of local botanicals and a willingness to experiment with flavours, there have been some stunning and unique bottlings of Welsh gin released, from brands such as Dà Mhìle, Eccentric Gin, Aber Falls and North Star. Among the wealth of wonderful Welsh Expressions are Dà Mhìle Seaweed Gin, Eccentric Limbeck New Western Gin, Aber Falls Orange Marmalade Gin and Merywen Gin. The future is bright too. In January 2018 Wales' gin producers reported bumper Christmas sales, with Snowdonia Distillery in Tal-y-Cafn, Conwy County and Caerphilly's Eccentric Gins both having tripled gin sales compared to the previous year. Penderyn also reported its own sales as having more than doubled.
