Big Peat Christmas 2015 Bottling Note

The 2015 edition of Big Peat at Christmas has flown in on a no horse open sleigh! As ever, Big Peat is a full-bodied, gloriously peaty blended malt made with whiskies from some of Islay's most renowned distilleries, including Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and even Port Ellen. In celebration of the festive season, however, it's been bottled at cask strength! Top stuff from the folks at Douglas Laing.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Milk chocolate Hob Nobs, scorched earth, smoked ham and a little sea spray.

Palate: Warm ashy sand, coastal flora and more sea salt amidst bonfire smoke, nutty barley and soft fruits.

Finish: Long, nice and sooty.

Overall: Islay be enjoying this on Christmas day, no doubt. (Sorry.)

Big Peat at Christmas 2015 Reviews

Excellent stuff

I wish it could be Christmas everyday with this dram. Think smoked bacon on buttered whole meal (slighted burnt) toast. Excellent stuff.

Perfect 4!

Heavy Ardbeg influence - salty mouth watering, very good cask strength dram!

23rd August 2016 - My Whisky Blog

Nose; Fresh peaty spice, Strong Salty Sea-Air, Green Apples.

Taste; Sweet & Sour, Nutty, Strong Liquorice, More subtle Peat & Smoke then the Nose, Mild sugar & chocolate.

Finish; Long & mouth watering, very moorish.

I'm amazed how easy drinking this is considering the percentage, excellent dram.

Big Peat and smoke

At 35-40 ppm this whisky packs a punch. Some citrus on the nose, tarry, industrial and smoke.

Earthy on the palate. Big Peat and smoke. Steam engine. Seashell and tarry rope. Really get the seashore feeling in the mouth.

Massive. Full and long finish with a lot of nice smokiness.

Buy Something else

I love my Islay malts, especially Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin and thought I'd try this for a new experience but for the £54 I paid I was disappointed and wish I'd bought a bottle of Oogy for about the same price or saved £20 and gone for an ardbeg 10yo. This blend just doesn't have the character of a thoroughbred and seems biased more towards the Bowmore type of flavour which is ok but not really my bag. I'll finish the bottle as its not unpalatable but wont buy another.

X-Mas fireside companion

Most definitely Islay. Waves of peat, lush fruit and seaside. Excellent (if powerful) on it's own, couple drops of agua and this really opens up. Agree with other reviewer that Bowmore dominates at first, but there are deeper flavors here. Excellent value and as expected high quality from Douglas Laing.

Absolute stunner

This really does hit the spot, very good quality and at cask strength. Never had the original big peat but I'm so glad I got a bottle of this. Get it while you can it won't be around for long.

Lovely young peaty ashy drop

Nice and citrusy ashy aroma, bit of peach. Seems to be thin but definitely Winter Warmener. Bowmore style quite dominating, but with drop of water other flavors are rising very enjoyable though...
