Mount Gay Extra Old Reviews

Hmmm...something has changed

Something's changed. Cant confirm what the guy below me is saying but I have always paid around 40 for it...with that said there sure is a drop in mount gay xo since my last bottle ( the one with mount gay extra old written in gold at the bottom of a black label with the barbados map outlined) this triple cask which is what is at my local total wines for just over $45 now has replaced the XO bottle shown on the site and while sweeter, in my opinion is just hiding some rough edges...i did not enjoy this new one straight, although mixed with a splash of gingerale and lime it was actually quite good...not 45 dollars good mind you. Better value elsewhere.

Extra old keeps getting younger...

When I first tried MGXO back in 2008 it was " a blend of rums aged from 12 to 15 years" and was one of the best rums I ever sampled...and it was a steal...generally under 30 USD for a 750ml . Over the years, sometime maybe around 2012 they changed not only the label, but also the age...moved from 8 to 15....this last version says 7 to 15.... and now for 2020 they say aged 5 to 17.... and the proce is nearly double. Having sampled the new 2020 version called mgxo triple cask...the difference in quality is very evident... there is much more alcohol bite and it is much more rough than even the last version. Younger and younger rums and higher and higher prices have turned a once sublime rum into an expensive imposter. Sorry Mount Gay buy you've sold out!

The very best of rums

Fantastic on your nose
Extremely smooth taste beautiful after aroma on your pallet.
And kicks your backside 👌😉

7th June 2020

Smooth and full flavoured. Light sweetness. Will make you smile, not fight.

Have recently converted from the molasses styles to the cleaner Barbadian styles. This is a very well priced and lovely drink. Agree with previous comments, please don't mix this. It's way too good and needs nothing.

Great stuff

Anybody who drinks this with cola, should not be allowed to drink decent rum.
You guys can stick with Bacardi blanco

I have reordered this many times

I have sampled a lot of Rum in my days from the darkest still to APPLETON, FOUR SQUARE, Zacapa 23 and the BEST of the BEST this is great value and a treat to Drink. Simply two ice and a little mixer of choice

I have reordered this

Very enjoyable tippel two ice and a little mixer of choice. I would put this up with Zacapa 23 year old

The best

I really don't care for any of the other rums produced by Mt Gay, but Extra Old is, to me, the best rum I have ever tasted. It is RUM, nothing more, nothing less. This is the benchmark. Sip it neat, because mixing this with anything would just be criminal.

We must be drinking different stuff

I know these things are very subjective but I was disappointed, I found it far too syrupy for my taste, even when diluted with Coke and at £36 a bottle it's a bit expensive for that.

Solid sugar-free stuff

A very good rum without any added sugar or flavours.

I have to laugh at the person who said Plantation XO beats this. This is actual rum. Plantation XO on the other hand is sugar, sugar and more sugar with a splash of characterless molasses-derived ethanol which has had any remaining soul or substance blended out of it. I mean, they should put a health warning on that stuff--not because of the alcohol, but because you're likely to get diabetes drinking it! Anyway, this is a very solid Bajan rum. A good place to start for bourbon fans.

Looks great

Getting it as present. Newer had it before

20th May 2017

Damn near perfect for sipping!

Being a huge fan of Mount Gay Black Barrel and having a little extra coin in my pocket one evening, I thought I'd give XO a shot. Two words: LOVED IT! Damn near perfect for sipping. Doesn't quite finish as peppery as the Black Barrel, but has a more complex taste and seems bit more full-bodied. Sweet with the distinct flavor of molasses. A bit nutty. Very enjoyable. And it's affordable!

30th January 2017

Sweet and chocolatey

A really delicious rum in the sweet chocolate style. Great value for sipping or mixing.

5th November 2016

Make it your first of the day

It's not bad. when you drink this first it's actually rather nice, you know, for a €38 rum.
some oak, a little moss. maybe some nuts. if it's your second drink of the day however and the first was a good whisky or rum with a good palate, i fear this one as a follow-up will lack a bit of character and taste more oaky and sugarcane-y, even rather alcoholy..
not bad, but not a keeper to me. plantation xo beats this.

One of the best tasting rums from the Caribbean

1st October 2016

Best ever

Tried lots of rums and brandy. After a holiday in Barbados I fell in love with this MGXO. Now even better, I've found it for £35 instead of £50 I used to pay in Macro...

My favorite! Simply the best!!

Amazing balance of sweetness and strength

16th April 2016

I like the taste but find that Plantation XO beats it hands down.

Christmas with "Chuck's" special egg nog and this rum, amazing!

Subtle oak dryness when drunk neat

This rum is of great quality. It's sweet sent, like a just opened banana baked in tinfoil on the BBQ with scoops of ice-cream melting on top, hide a subtle oak dryness its when drunk neat. Its honey & vanilla notes come out even more as you loosen it with Ice or mix it Cola.

Mount Gay Extra Old

I’m a whisky drinker and have been dabbling into rums a little bit lately and I was just beginning to lose interest as I hadn’t come across anything that I thought was that great. I tried Rumbullion which is nice but it’s more like a liqueur than anything, an extremely good, well-made and enjoyable liqueur but I’m just not a big fan of spirits that are artificially flavoured, especially to that extent. Also tried some others including Angostora 1919 and Havana Club 7 which were both pretty good, much more naturally flavoured but also both flawed. But when I tried this my eyes were opened to how good rum can be when it’s done right. It has that tropical like flavour you expect from Rum but it is so clean and flawless and has a wonderful maturity about it, it is just stunning.

Rum taster

A smooth warm rum lots of taste to its wonderful flavours which leaves a nice aftertaste that lingers well a delightfull rum to drink neat and savour nothing bad to say about this rum don't believe me buy your own and find out

6th June 2015

The original rum

Brothers in Barbados drink this like water from the morning, never Eclipse which is strictly for Rum Punch. Oh, the life

11th April 2015

Great for Aussie Summer

MGXO, fresh lime, mint or Vietnamese mint (peppery taste offsets some sweetness) with dry gingerale and ice..most importatant, serve in a fine glass tumbler! You'll be on holiday the moment it touches your lips!

3rd November 2014

The best rum so far

This has a superior quality to other rums I have tasted. The fruity dry taste with a hint of oak is perfect. I have tasted many rums and have to say it will take something special to knock this off the top of my favorite list.

30th September 2014

Very nice

Flavours of banana and toffee, a very nice experience, but lacks something in this price range. I am yet to try the El Dorado 12 but have my eye on that. Although Mount Gay XO is an excellent rum I will not be buying a replacement bottle - it didn't quite captivate me enough.

5th June 2014

Always in my liquor cabinet... right next to Pyrat.

This is one I can't do without for its price. On its own I find it to be the finest rum, but even then a little underwhelming in some attributes. Still, if I had to pick only one rum (how sad a concept) it would be MGXO. Now I have to come clean about what I do with it. First, the corks on some bottles are not snug so I save old corks for future bottles, just in case. Second, and some of you are gonna hate this, I pour half of a new bottle into an old de-labeled MG bottle and fill it with Pyrat, another (supposed) XO. As I said, MGXO is a little underwhelming. Pyrat is a little Overwhelming on the nose and palate, yet less burn than MG. Blended, however... Whole New Worlds come alive! I don't even touch it with (Mexico Bottled = Real Sugar) Coke. That's what my few remaining bottles of MG Black are for. No, this blend is amazingly drinkable on the rocks.

5th May 2014

Mixed with Coke made with Sugar - it remarries pure cane

Coke made with refined cane sugar- refining removed the molasses. Mount Gay is made from fermented molasses. remixing the two creates a very complex, vanilla, light spiced rum and coke second to none. No hang-over. Or drinking it neat is the next step. I will never want another rum.

19th March 2014

Great rum

Even better value - get it!!!

7th February 2014

Cracker rum..full of flavour and long lasting on the of my go to rums along with Appelton 12yo, El Dorado range & Diplomatico reserva..any new takers will not be let down.

13th December 2013

What a discovery

While raiding my buddy's teetotaling father's liquor cabinet some years back, we discovered an old unopened bottle of this shoved into the back behind the mostly empty Jacks and Absoluts and such. The label looked completely different than today's. "Extra Older," if you will. Not having had much rum besides stock Bacardi and Captain M here or there, this was a delicious surprise. Complex smooth mellow sugar banana deliciousness! It was a true find and is wonderful to sip, maybe with a stone or two. Haven't mixed it, but I'm sure it would make a good rum cocktail exceptional...YAY VERILY

28th November 2013

Best rum

I first had this in a mojito in a bar in Sydney and it blew me away - I had to go back and find the same bartender to discover what rum he used!! Even in a cocktail, it stood out massively!! Delicious

30th June 2013

One of the best

This got to be one of the very best spirits in the world today, not that i've tasted all of the best, or even close but this puts the bar sooo high. Watta Rum... And for the price a real bargain

28th February 2013

As a rum drinker for many years, of Trinidad origin, I have tried many, discarded many, and would say that this is amongst my favourites along with Santa Theresa 1376, Diplomatico Reserva, Pampero Anniversario, English Harbour 7 yrs, name a few. Smooth, great nose, not overly oaky. Good sipping rum, great with mixers (best with proper coca cola or ginger ale), a good export for Barbados, brings the sunshine out on a winters days...enjoy.

1st December 2012

The flagship of rum

This is the real deal: smooth, consistent-like an old friend you know you can depend on. The flavor is complex with a smooth feel and a long finish. Every rum lover should have a bottle on hand.

31st August 2012

Gorgeous but don't like that cork!

This is presently my favorite Rum... Lovely sweet undertones of fruit with just a hint of banana. Great shaped & heavy bottle spoiled by cork stopper that is too small to seal properly.

8th May 2012

Brilliant name, brilliant swill.

Let's be honest, this rum doesn't need my praise. It doesn't need anything, except to be enjoyed by all avid rum fans. I actually laughed gaily when I tasted it. Oh the memories.

31st January 2012

Dan, Lincoln

A nice, smooth, well-bodied rum. Smells great and tastes great too. I will definitely be buying a bottle.
