English Rum

Rum, while not originating from England, has a rich history tied to the country through its seafaring, trade, and colonial past. Historically, the sugarcane used to make rum was grown in British colonies in the Caribbean and then transported to England, where it was often refined and then distilled into rum.

The Making of English Rum

Rum is typically made from sugarcane juice or molasses, which is a byproduct of sugarcane refining. The sugarcane or molasses is fermented, distilled, and then aged in barrels. The ageing process is vital to developing the flavour of the rum. In England, despite the lack of sugarcane fields, rum production is possible because it involves importing molasses from other countries.

Añejo rum, a term that comes from Spanish, translates to "old" and indicates that the rum has been aged, often for several years. Añejo rum is typically darker and has a richer, sweeter, and more complex flavour compared to lighter, younger rums. The ageing must occur in wooden casks, and the environment where the rum is stored—be it a humid, tropical climate or a cooler, temperate one—will influence the final product significantly.

English Rum Brands

There are several notable English rum brands. One such example is "Pusser's Rum", which has strong ties to the British Royal Navy. Until 1970, sailors in the British Royal Navy were given a daily rum ration, and Pusser’s Rum aims to replicate the flavour of the traditional rum used at that time.

Another notable brand is "Rumbullion!", an artisanal, spiced rum known for its rich, full-bodied flavour and high-quality ingredients. This rum merges rich history with a contemporary touch, offering a glimpse into the earlier days of rum in a modern bottle.

Contemporary English Rum Scene

In recent times, England, especially regions like Cornwall and Devon, has witnessed a resurgence of rum production, creating a vibrant and innovative English rum scene. Craft distilleries are popping up, producing an array of rums that encompass various styles, from spiced and flavoured rums to dark and white rums. These newer players in the market bring innovative approaches, experimenting with different ageing processes, spice infusions, and even sustainable practices in their production methods.

Industry Recognition

English rums have begun to earn recognition and accolades within the industry. For instance, several English rums have been awarded at global spirits competitions, highlighting the quality and innovation present in the English rum market. Pusser's Rum, for example, has clinched several awards for its rich, full-bodied flavour and adherence to traditional rum production methods.

English rum intertwines rich historical narratives with a modern, innovative spirit, crafting a distinct position within the global rum industry. From traditional brands steeped in naval history to contemporary distilleries that experiment with flavours, ageing processes, and sustainability, English rum encapsulates a journey from the high seas of the past to the vibrant, diverse rum offerings available today. This evolution, marked by an adherence to quality and a penchant for innovation, propels English rum into an exciting future, poised to continue captivating palates worldwide.
