The Los Siete Misterios Mezcal is made using the Angustifolia Agave plant. Mezcal, like Tequila, originates from Mexico and like Tequila it is made using the Agave plant. The main difference being that Tequila has to use the Blue Agave plant (Agave Tequilana) whereas Mezcal can use a variety of other Agaves. The result is a more rustic style of Tequila, however in recent years the quality of Mezcals has been catching Tequila up as seen here with the Los Siete Misterios Espadin which won silver at Spirits of Mexico 2011.
Nose: This mezcal almost has the aroma of a malt whisky with notes of toffee, mince pies and a touch of smoke.
Palate: This mezcal has a powerful mouth-feel with mounds of dried fruit complemented by sweet spice, demerara sugar and oak smoke.
Finish: Warm wood smoke, sugar syrup and mixed spice.
Overall: This mezcal will appeal to whisky drinkers thanks to its similarities with a sherried whisky.

This is a great Mezcal, but it ain't got sherry. It's still a beauty however; The chaps got the tasting notes right, but don't expect a rich & heavy sherry influenced dram. It's much lighter and herbal, but still beautiful with a sweet, almost malty, core and the most marvelous oak driven smoke in the finish...
