The small, charming Benromach makes a distinctive style of whisky

Smoke, sherry, and Benromach

Benromach is based in Forres and was founded in 1898, although the distillery we know today owes much to Gordon & MacPhail. The family-owned independent bottler bought the silent distillery in 1993, restored it and brought spirit back through its stills in 1998.

The aim was not to make another sweet and polite Speyside fruit bowl. Benromach set out to recover something the region had largely left behind: a richer, smokier style of spirit. Many of you will know that peat is not the exclusive property of Islay. In the early days of Scotch whisky, barley was typically malted locally and before coal was brought to the Highlands and beyond by rail, peat was regulalry the fuel used to dry it. Benromach’s house character is a deliberate nod to that history.

“This release feels really special to all of us here at Benromach. At our family-owned distillery, we’ve worked hard to recreate the character that once defined our home here in Speyside – a rich single malt whisky with a delicate hint of smoke – and this spirit does just that. The team has put their heart and soul into making this whisky, and we can’t wait to share it. And lovers of our 10-year-old single malt needn’t worry; it will still be readily available.”

That was Stuart Urquhart, operations director and fourth-generation family member at Gordon & MacPhail. It’s what I just said basically but it’s from the horse’s mouth, so you know it’s true.

Benromach 12 Years Old review:

The other signature flavour driver is first-fill sherry casks. A cask being used to age Scotch for the first time generally has plenty to say, and these casks bring the dense dried fruit, cocoa and sweet spice. The smoke works underneath, drying the sweetness, adding savoury depth, and brings a balance to the whole enterprise.

The new bottling is the product of planning as much as age. Distillery manager Murdo MacKenzie says a 12-year-old single malt has long been part of Benromach’s plans, but the distillery needed its stocks to mature before it could introduce one with the depth and consistency required of a flagship.

The strength matters, too. Bottling at 46% ABV and without chill filtration retains more of the whisky’s texture and flavour. This is not a cask-strength bruiser, nor should it be. It has enough weight to carry the first-fill sherry influence without burying Benromach’s distillate beneath it.

What emerges is a useful summary of the distillery: old-fashioned, sherried, and smoky. Get yours now and you might bag some really old bonus Benromach. That’s a win-win.

Benromach 12 Years Old Tasting Notes:

Nose: Spiced cinnamon buns and stewed raisins

Palate: Rich fruitcake with vibrant raspberry and orange, followed by cracked pepper and gentle smoke.

Finish: Spicy with lingering blackcurrant, subtle menthol and a touch of smoke.
