Malt Spirit is a new phenomenon and one we encourage wholeheartedly, it really is a fascinating thing. Because Scotch whisky must be aged for a minimum of three years and one day, any spirit that is aged for less that this cannot be called a whisky. Malt spirit is just a whisky that has not undergone the minimum maturation term. Scotch malt whisky is produced from nothing other than yeast, water and malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills.
Some of these malt spirits are aged for a while, whilst some are taken straight from the stills. Bottling whisky in this way allows up and coming distilleries to release products without having to wait for at least three years, it also gives us whisky fanatics a chance to really see the effects of maturation and how the spirit starts its life.
