The Hunter Valley in New South Wales is the nearest wine region to Sydney. It's particularly famous for its white wines, specifically semillon and chardonnay, but it makes some pretty tasty reds like this wine from Brokenwood. The winery was founded in 1970 by a group including top Australian wine writer James Halliday, and from the word go built a reputation for making some of the country's best wines.
Dark spices on the nose like cloves and cardamon, ripe plummy fruit, strawberries, and violets.
