Blue Corn Bourbon Bottling Note

Balcones were the first to use blue corn to create a corn whisky, and now they've gone and created a bourbon using blue corn in its mashbill too! A big, bold expression from the distillers in Waco, Texas - give it a drop of water to bring out more rich vanillas on the palate and finish...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Good whiffs of barrel char and treacle tart up front, followed by notes of buttered popcorn and cherry cola. Maybe a little touch of black liquorice. A drop of water brings out an enjoyable meatiness to it.

Palate: Oily and intense with pepper and nutmeg as it opens, developing red apple and chewy toffee notes. Chocolatey elements, too.

Finish: Lingering liquorice and sweet vanilla. A final touch of white pepper persists.

Overall: Very different from their Baby Blue, and very tasty indeed.

Balcones Texas Blue Corn Bourbon Whisky (64.5%) Reviews

Bourbon With A Difference

It's unmistakably Balcones. The high strength bourbon element on the nose changes on the palate. It's a corn led bourbon and with water (just a little) big oak tannin leading to a little bitterness on the finish characteristic of high proof bourbon. I like it but I like Balcones. It's not for everyone. There are a lot of quality high strength bourbons cheaper than this and a safer bet. If you are the experimental sort, with a spare bit of cash, give it a go.

Simply unbelievable

Hugely rich, almost effervescent in its red-apple-fizziness. This stuff is second to none. Hands-down the best release of this year.
