Super Tuscan alert! The term refers to wines that were created in the 1970s and '80s that sat outside the wine rules for Tuscany, usually because they contained French varieties like cabernet and merlot. Despite only technically being Vino di Tavola (table wine), wines such as Sassicaia and tignanello earned praise from around the world with prices to match. Siepi from the Mazzei family follows in that grand tradition. It comes from the Chianti Classico region but because it's 50% merlot, the rest is sangiovese, it can't be called 'Chianti.' It might look expensive but not compared with other Super Tuscans. Decant it for a couple of hours before drinking and we doubt you'll find a better red wine.
Blackcurrants, cloves, cardamom on the nose, touch of vanilla, coffee, and pencil shaving. On the palate, there's intense blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit with creamy oak. As it opens up it becomes more perfumed and Bordeaux-like but with an earthiness and spice that says Tuscany.
