Campo Viejo is one of the biggest names in Rioja and the basic crianza is very nice but the gran reserva is a big step up. This is made mainly from tempranillo with some mazuelo and granciano, and then spends two years in American oak casks followed by a few more years in bottle. So when you get this wine it is beautifully smooth and mature. Get out the roast leg lamb, open this and you will be very happy indeed.
Ripe fruit, strawberry, bramble and blackcurrant, baking spices, vanilla, tobacco and even a little mint in here. Very long and mellow.
