Douglas Laing's Rock Island bottles the epitome of the Scottish Islands. The blend marries a plethora of Island whiskies, with malts from Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura. The whisky has been bottled at a rather specific 46.8% ABV, and of course without colouring or chillfiltration. If you think this sounds all a bit familiar, the blended malt was previously dubbed 'Rock Oyster', though the name was changed because it turns out there's an awful lot of people who don't like oysters. Not to worry, it's the exact same great maritime whisky!
Wind-swept beaches, coastal peat and a hint of ash, complimented by touches of green fruit.
Yet more sea breeze, with oat cake crumbs, growing spicy notes of cracked black pepper and a deft whiff of peat smoke. Hints of vanilla here and there.
Salinity lasts on the finish along with peppery warmth.

This is so good. Sweet, salty, peaty, fruity. So much going on but pulled together beautifully. This is like a tasting menu in a dram. 10/10
On my third bottle and will repurchase - perfect nose of pear and just enough salt breeze for me.
Makes an amazing substitute for vodka in a Bloody Mary! Absolutely delicious, you can taste the sea, peat and the air of windswept beaches
I was not impressed with this blend. I got the strength but not a lot more. Not enough peat, not enough smoke, no where near enough seaweed.
Surprised to come and find good reviews of this whiskey - I recieved a bottle in my MoM advert calendar (which was great!) and I really didn't enjoy. Thought I would leave a review to add some contrast! Nice flavours of peat and brine throughout, with notes of blackcurrant in the middle. However this is somewhat ruined by an overly harsh mouthfeel, which is uncomfortably peppery towards the end. A hint of boiled veg / sulfur is also apparent which I found unpleasant. Finish is quite nice, with lingering warmth, peat and brine; but not enough to redeem by a long way.
