Lagavulin 2001 Distillers Bottling Note

Lagavulin's Distillers Edition bottlings are allowed a finishing period in casks that previously held sweet, sticky Pedro Ximénez Sherry. The result is a magnificent blend of classic Islay salty peat smoke and intense Sherried sweetness. This is the 2001 Distillers Edition, which was bottled at 43% ABV in 2017.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Seaweed, Christmas cake, mint leaf, dates and amaretto.

Palate: This one packs a mighty peaty punch, followed by juicy raspberry, dark chocolate and Sherried orange peel.

Finish: Sea salt lingers on the finish.

Lagavulin 2001 (bottled 2017) Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish - Distillers Edition Reviews

good on it's own, taste+price point vs standard 16 however...

A very good whikey, solid 4/5... however as a value for money play I rate it a 1/5... For me, it is just not worth a 25% premium over the 16.yo. 150CAD for this, or 120CAD for the 16YO... It is very good, but in a blind taste I would actually prefer the standard 16 y.o to this.. for me, the sherry influence is just a little overhyped, and takes a bit away of that sea salt smoked pancetta/bacon on charcoal taste that I just love from the standard offering. Other than being slightly smoother and a little sweeter, I would not personally spend my hard earned cash given the price points of these two at this time and would 10 times out of 10 take the standard 16.y.o.

Second best sherried islay

Lovely dram but ugi is still the best sherried peated islay for me.

Great, but still can't beat the Ugi

This is great whisky, unbelievably smooth and sophisticated. The nose is something one could drown in - beautiful balance of smoke, dried fruits, a hint of menthol. The palate is smooth as silk, but a bit thin for me. Not the thick coating mouthfeel I prefer. Brilliantly balance of flavors (dried fruits, saltiness, a bit of rum and raisins, and the peat is polished and suave. Slightly longish finish with the flavors flickering around.

Great whisky, but in my book it still doesn't beat the Ugi. A bit thin and straightforward without the intensity I prefer. Solid 4 🌟 s

A must have!

I haven't opened the bottle yet. If I ever will... I have the exact bottle as shown in the picture above. Bought it in Edinburgh last summer. Is that really real?

A privilege

You really are doing ok if this is your drink! I loved every drop of this, you instinctively compare it to the 16yr but really should be appreciated on its own merits.

Really complex, woody flavours. Sweet and salt tones, long finish.

Absolutely superb, would buy again and again

A stonker

You will love it or hate it or sit on the fence. However it’s a stonker of a whisky and only you can decide. Forget all the pompous reviews and have a dram. Make your own mind up. Great or crap, you decide. For that money your privilege.

Sublime

A lifelong fan of Lagavulin I couldn’t wait to try this.
It wasn’t better or worse than the 16yr, which was a surprise, it simply put a different spin on it.
A truely amazing whisky, more woody and full flavoured? Than the 16yr.
You have arrived in life if you get to try this! Just buy it, don’t wait like I did....

Phenomenal

Absolutely wonderful, I generally consider Lagavulin 16 yr the best whisky in the world for under $100 and this is a slight variation on it with a bit more sweetness and smoothness on the finish. I don't know if this is mental but the effects are so pleasant too its a nice gentle buzz

Lagavulin Gods nectar

I first bought this bottle 3 month ago and almost finished it. I have a couple favorite bottles that I would put in my top 5 and... I have this one. this laga DE is something different, a whisky I would give a note of 99/100. It is the perfect match between peat, the coastal iodine influence and a sweet fruity taste. Even you have something very good like the Laphroaig triple Wood, Talisker DE or Ardbeg Corrivreckan, this Laga just stays over the top. From my point of view, I do not think it is possible to find better than this magical whisky under 100 €.

The ultimate whiskey!!!

I like to collect and drink the best whiskeys and have several (usually around 20+ at any given time) whiskeys from each Scottish region (and a few from Ireland). I prefer single malts to blends.

I have the winning whiskey from each of the last four years. They are all very good. When I want that special whiskey taste, this distillers edition beats them all!!

Perfect on its own or a good Cuban cigar like Cohiba.

It's my favourite whisky

The best

I am a newby in the great world of whisky. I have couple bottles, mostly islay, but also speyside or Irish ones.
Everytime I drink this one, I just think : "This whisky is on another level" !

Smooth, peaty, delicate and complex, and so well balance... Just amazing stuff which makes love Whisky.

You have to try it !

Good in a different way.

Conflicted, if you compare this to the Lagavulin 16 you will be just that... " Conflicted". It's not bad I enjoyed it, but just not sure if it's better, it's different. Would I buy it again, probably not. I'm pretty much a traditionalst. Enjoyed this with a Oliva Masters Blend. This will be a personal preference for everyone to try at least once. You won't be disappointed either way . " Sláinte"

Good but not great

I don't think that the smoky and sweet combination complement each other too well. It looks and smells amazing, but I found the combination of flavours far too overpowering. Lagavulin 16 y.o. still remains my go to malt.

This is ‘the one’

Exceptional Whisky in every way, Smokey, sweet and smooth. The guys at MoM have this spot on. Worth noting that this 2001 is better than the 1999 which was great but just fell short.

Delicious

A delicious version of lagavulin Depth of flavour yet still smoky and peaty

Time takes out the fire but leaves in the warmth

Amazing! A lovely combination of a sherry finish combined with Lagavullin’s smokeyness. When you pour a glass of this lovely liquid, wait about 5 minutes before drinking it. This will make the experience much better, trust me.

My favorite from Islay

I prefer it than the 16 yo

22nd March 2018

Outstanding!

This was my first smokey whisky and it was amazeballs. Idk why I was ever hesitant to try smokey whisky but this was great to get me into it with the slight sweetness mixed in with the delicious campfire flavor. Currently my favorite Scotch, will buy more and get into more heavily peated Scotches because of it!

15th March 2018

Excellent! Buy it all!

My first Lagavulin as a New Years resolution to try more Islays. Excellent stuff. I hate peat and smoke... or at least I thought I did until I tried this, Ardbeg 10, and Bowmore 15 Darkest. If I can find more it's coming home with me!
