Douglas Laing
Scotland
Rock Island 21 Year Old is a limited edition blended malt from Douglas Laing, marrying together Island single malts from Islay, Arran, Jura and Orkney. This one exclusively features whiskies aged for at least 21 years, and only 4,200 bottles have been produced at 46.8% ABV.
Sea spray intertwined with bonfire smoke, peat and vanilla pod.
A crack of black pepper, a hint of salty smoked meats, barley sugar, earthy malt, and maritime peat smoke with vanilla sponge.
A dash of vanilla in between returning salty coastal notes and warming spice.
I had a shitty shitty day and got this from my whisky calendar. It was amazing despite the moment being really shitty. So smooth and elegant, smoky but nothing cumbersome.
I have an extensive range of whisky's and this is always my "go to" choice. Just perfect, cannot get enough. If you are partial to a peaty, smooth and drinkable whisky this is the perfect choice
Slightly darker in colour then the 10, as you would expect from the extra cask maturation. The nose is total sea spray and beach, lovely aroma. Notes too of lemon zest and pineapple chunks, along with a very zingy minty note. It would be good for a blocked nose! On the first sip, it makes your mouth tingle and water. It has everything, sweet, sour and spicy. Vanilla mixes with a light ginger and pepper, the saltiness mixing beautifully with the cask oak. The sea spray remains on a very long finish, along with traces of tropical fruit and banana. Adding a drop of water brings the spice to the fore, a little more pepper and chilli, toning down the beach explosion. I'd personally prefer it neat. A wonderful dram, which I will look into to replace my 10 year old when it's drunk. Sensational.
