A truly crazy Batshit Mental creation, Very Old Tom is created from a base blend of spirits - both aged and unaged - which is subsequently tweaked using cold distilled botanicals including juniper, coriander, cardamom, fresh lemon peel, fresh grapefruit peel, fresh lime peel, fresh orange peel, fresh clementine peel, Earl Grey tea, angelica, liquorice and orris root. It's then macerated with fresh juniper berries and slightly sweetened (the hallmark of an Old Tom gin). Finally, it's filled into 50 litre casks for a further five months maturation!
Nose: Opens with clean juniper and Cayenne pepper, followed by fragrant tree resin. This leads to leafy blackberry bush notes, rounded off with whiffs of fresh iced buns.
Palate: Juicy orange flesh and waxy peels. Nods to classic Old Tom sweetness, as well as spicy cardamom and subtly grippy, oak-y tannins.
Finish: Balanced on the finish with lasting sugary notes and touches of oak spice.

Deliciously rich and very fruity - there's an epic amount of Juniper in here - it works incredibly well in a Negroni.

Have to say with a fever tree tonic not so great, but a ginger ale works better, bit like bath tub and ophir

Ooh, this is fun. Now, I'm a whisky drinker who enjoys a G&T. I saw a bottle of this in a pub a week or so ago and was intrigued, so ordered myself a bottle. It smells of gin; it has that lovely medicinal twang to it, but the taste is something quite different. There's quite a lot of toffee up front and lots of spices behind that. I added a drop of water (as you would with a single malt) and that improved it. It needed more to tame it, so I added an ice cube. Now that did the trick. It's a lovely drink. An end of the night drink. A little like a whisky liqueur, Drambuie for example, but it's nothing like Drambuie. Don't add tonic. Just pop an ice cube in and sit back, enjoy that end of the evening in a cheap nightclub feel. You know, a cheap nightclub that no one knows about, the one that will be ruined once the hipsters find it. Savour the moment.

Totally not what I was expecting - very rich - there's apparently loads of super-aged spirits in here.

I bought this for my wife, who's more into gin than whisky. I really liked it, but I'm more into whisky than gin. I think I was hoping, as was the wife, for more of a botanics infused gin, rather than a whisky flavoured botanically infused gin. Like I say, very nice, but not quite what I was expecting.
