Spanish Whisky

Spanish whisky covers more ground than you might expect. 

Some of it starts life as malt whisky distilled in Scotland or Ireland, matured for years, then shipped south to Jerez, where sherry producer Gonzalez Byass finishes it in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks before bottling. Think of it as whisky on a Spanish sabbatical, picking up the dried fruit, nuttiness and sherried richness of the bodegas it rests in.

Others - like DYC, one of the earliest and largest whisky producers in Spain,  are distilled and matured in Spain from the start. Barley is malted and distilled in Spain, then aged in casks that might’ve once held Rioja wine, giving a style built for everyday drinking rather than showing off.

If you're asking for it locally, whisky is simply whisky in Spanish too, though you'll sometimes hear the older güisqui. Ask for whisky escocés and you're asking for Scotch specifically, escocés meaning Scottish.
