Spanish Single Malt Whisky

Whisky production in Spain has a surprisingly long history. Destilerias Acha in the Basque country has been producing Haran whisky since the 1920s. Then there’s Destilerías y Crianza del Whisky or Whisky DYC for short, pronounced ‘whisky dick’ (no sniggering at the back there) which has been going since 1959. It’s now owned by Beam Suntory and available in a number of forms including a massive-selling blended whisky which is usually drunk with Coca-Cola and some rarely-seen single malts including 10 and 15 year old expressions. In recent years, it has been joined by smaller distilleries such as Madrid’s Santamanía which released its first Mentidero single malt in 2019, aged in ex-Rioja casks.
