SNARKITECTURE
A 20 year old Islay single malt from the Captivo Collection, dreamt up with New York design studio Snarkitecture. Two decades in American oak, with oloroso sherry seasoning, and a box that doubles as a portal. Look closer - there's always more going on.
From New York to Islay
It started when Snarkitecture's Alex Mustonen swapped New York for Bowmore's No.1 Vaults. It's one of Scotland's oldest maturation warehouses, sitting below sea level on the shore of Loch Indaal. The wild coastline and the slow-moving light of the vaults shaped everything that followed.
Snarkitecture Explained
Snarkitecture is a New York studio working where art, architecture and design overlap, led by co-founder Alex Mustonen. Their thing is finding the unexpected hiding in the everyday: a surface that turns out to be a doorway, or a familiar shape that suddenly asks a question.
For the Captivo Collection, that became a story about thresholds and passages. It follows the journey each whisky makes from the day it goes into cask to the day it's poured. Hence the carved, portal-like packaging. And hence the second sip, which is where Bowmore has always kept its best surprises.
How to Enjoy
Twenty years in the making deserves your full attention, so keep it simple: neat, in a tumbler or nosing glass, at room temperature. No ice, no mixers, no distractions.
Give it a minute in the glass first. Nose it for salted toffee and orange peel, then take a small sip and let it sit, because at 50.8% it has some heft. Dark cherry, manuka honey and a cool flash of eucalyptus arrive in waves, with a wisp of campfire smoke at the end. Then go back for a second sip - that's where Bowmore keeps its best surprises.
Cherry, orange peel, vanilla
Everything on that plinth is in the glass.
