Here's something rather special. It's a Cote Rotie from the Northern Rhone, the words mean 'roasted slope' as this little patch of land really soaks up the sun. Despite its name, however, wines from Cote Rotie tend to be elegant and perfumed rather then big and brutish, helped by a small percentage of viognier, a white grape, added to the syrah. At ten years old this is drinking beautifully, the tannins have softened and its showing its famous floral side.
Dark cherry and raspberry fruit with a note of violets and rosemary leading to savoury leather, mushroom and smoky bacon notes. Very long.
