For many years the Californian grape zinfandel was a bit of a mystery. Where did it come from and what was it doing in California? It was only conclusively proved fairly recently that it is indeed the same as primitivo from Southern Italy and the catchily-named crljenak kastelanski from Croatia. Wherever it's grown, it tends to make big generous wines, high in fruit and high in alcohol. Seghesio has been making great zinfandel for over 120 years so they really know what they're doing.
Blueberries, damsons, plums, lots of ripe fruit with spices such as cinnamon and cardamom.
