What a treat this is. You'd don't often see mature Californian pinot noir on sale in Britain. Domaine Anderson, based in the Anderson Valley in Carneros, has been making superb wines from Burgundian varieties, chardonnay and pinot, since the 1980s. The taste, however, is all California, rich, spicy, soft but also elegant and beautifully-balanced.
Heady nose, maraschino cherries, spicy, even a bit medicinal. Soft and spicy on the palate, some cooked fruit, just a little tannin here, leather, then a sort of chestnut texture like you get in a mature southern Rhone wine. Delightful.
