WhistlePig 14yo #4 (2017) Bottling Note

The fourth release in WhistlePig's Boss Hog series has arrived! This is a 14 year old rye whiskey (sourced from Indiana, USA, rather than Canada as many previous WhitlePig expressions have been) that has enjoyed a finishing period in Armagnac casks - it's said to be the first rye whiskey finished in casks of this type! The expression has been dubbed The Black Prince after Edward of Woodstock, who was said to have enjoyed Armagnac back in the 14th century.

This was named Best in Show Whiskey at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017 - a massive achievement!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Pipe tobacco, roasted fig, resinous oak, a touch of black tea and fragrant incense.

Palate: Chocolate peanuts, orange oil, maple syrup, a whack of spicy clove and toasted staves.

Finish: A burst of bright orchard fruit and creamy butterscotch.

Worth it

This is hands down my favorite whiskey of 2017. I’ve shared it with a half dozen seasoned whiskey friends without telling them what it is, and they were all blown away. So much so that we bought another bottle together to split. It is simply fantastic. Interesting side note - the pewter cork topper on the early bottlings featured the full standing pig, while the more recent bottlings feature just the upper torso of the pig. This was because some of the early bottles had to endure a little heat during shipping. And the tops being pewter, the tall skinny pig sometimes got warm enough to where the pewter got soft and the pig sagged over to one side. The thicker torso on the more recent bottlings prevent this from happening.
