A 9 year old Highland single malt from the Tomatin distillery. This particular expression was distilled on 20 July 2009 and matured in a single first fill oloroso sherry butt for nine years before it was bottled in August 2018. Just 598 bottles were produced.

Nose

Stem ginger, sherried peels and dark chocolate.

Palate

Rich treacle, roasted chestnut, sticky dried fruit and clove.

Finish

Hints of sweet oak and more baking spice.

Not just a sh#tload of choccy fruits - 6 stars!

A case of pearls before swine, to continue the Mr (no lady would write that) Meh pork based reference. 2 dimensional, my arse. Quality spirit into a quality cask has produced a sh#tload of complexity and flavour development. Yes, Tomatin can be humdrum, mundane and price point-y, but so can every distillery. Similarly, that's the beauty of every distillery's collection of "rogue" casks. Something left field for the curious and discerning punter. In this case, everything from the less sexy grass and mouldy bread/thyme notes through to bitter dark chocolate via soy sauce and beef stock, shortbread, maple syrup, licorice, spearmint, ginger cake, balsamico, deep heat embrocation, cold minestrone,prunes,tiramisu, Turkish delight & rosewater, burning dust. And that's just "taking the neckpour top off", on the first day! A bit more to come, methinks. Hopefully Master of MALT won't take the piss when restocking. Put me down for a case!

For a little more, the Hazelburn 14 Oloroso basically drowned this bigger. Decent dram without the 'X' factor

Nobody could doubt the quality of the cask employed here, or the quality of the presentation, as both are as good as could be wished for. Sadly the limiting factor is the spirit itself. Whilst Tomatin is a clean, well-made whisky, it is two-dimensional almost to the point of being boring, with very little in the way of flavour development beyond the initial sherry-soaked attack of the arrival. This is a pleasant whisky, which no drinker of any experience would refuse, but Macallan, Ardbeg, Springbank et al aren't going to be sweating about competition from Tomatin distillery any time soon. The big names are the big names for a reason. You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.
