    Product details

    Tobermory 12 Year Old

Released in early 2019, this 12 year old single malt from Tobermory was launched in celebration of the distillery returning to life after a two year break! This expression slumbered peacefully in American oak casks for a dozen years before being bottled at 46.3% ABV. What a way to get back in the swing of things!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Pear, peach and apple, with a dusting of brown sugar. Greek yogurt, barley and a hint of cinnamon pastries.

    Palate

Rounded malt notes once again, now a touch oily. Still packs a hearty helping of stone fruit sweetness.

    Finish

A flash of orange peel, soft sawdust, toffee and dates.

    Good value

This is a decent malt though I'd say the strongest flavours are coming from the American oak. It's a route taken by deanston also and it does bolster the light spirit in a similar way. Someone mentioned peat notes but I suspect it was the effect and feel of the oak they were picking up. Anyway, good value if you like a bourbony scotch.

    Delightful with a sweetness.

Took the advantage of the discounted price. Delightful, well balanced whisky. If never tasted Tobermory whiskies before; 71 and still learning. An unexpected sweetness to it, not unlike some Irish whiskey. I'll be back for Tobermory.

    Fantastic

My sister bought this for me for Christmas. It was absolutely fantastic ! I've been drinking Glenfiddich Solera 15 and Balvenie Doublewood 12 (Balvenie Carribean Cask very disappointing) for perhaps too long now so this was a great change. Will be buying another bottle soon. Was recommended the Ledaig 10 recently so will try this as well after enjoying the Tobermory 12 so much. Great balance. Very smooth. Nothing I didn't dislike about it.

    Too peaty for my liking

I'm surprised I didn't enjoy this as much as expected considering the unanimously positive reviews. My main gripe is probably the fact it says unpeated, yet I found this to be the peatiest whisky I've tried in a good few years (I don't like peat flavour so try to avoid it completely). For reference, my favourite affordable whisky is the Balvenie Caribbean Cask, immensely smooth with a little sweetness from the rum casks, if anything it goes down too easily. Recently I've searched for alternatives for around half the price, somewhere between £20 - 35, the best I found was Jura Single Malt Rum Cask Finish for around £25 however upon checking now it seems that was an offer and the standard price is around £40. If you can find it below £30 go for it, that's a great deal. If you don't mind a bit of a peaty flavour, this is a fine choice but I personally wouldn't buy it again and will continue to search for a cheaper alternative to the Balvenie Caribbean Cask.. or maybe get the Jura Rum Cask when it's on offer.
