Douglas Laing

The latest Timorous Beastie, ‘Meet the Beast’ limited edition is here. Part of the Remarkable Regional Malts range, the big blend of Highland Scotch whisky was matured in 100% bourbon casks and bottled at a cask strength of 54.3% ABV, with no colour added and no chill-filtration.
The 2023 edition comes with a gift tube, inside of which are specially designed glasses in the style of old comic books that will reveal certain hidden secrets of this whisky and unveil the beast...
A truly colossal burst of sweet vanilla, citrus and juicy barley.
Soft, warm mouthfeel with notes of freshly baked gingerbread, a hint of liquid honey, and a gentle spice.
The finish is long, with a rich abundance of sweet meringue and caramels.

To me, sticking a malt spirit into a bourbon cask for a few years and hoping for the best isn't a recipe for a good whisky. Douglas Laing is capable of so much more and I've had many of their better offerings. With a good splash of water, it's quite smooth, but unremarkable. Vanilla sweetness, a bit of oak. Needs a bit of time in a sherry butt or a port pipe to give it some depth and character. Not expensive, but there's far better whisky to be had for less.....
