The Macallan Edition No.3

The third release in The Macallan's wood-focused Edition series saw master perfumer Roja Dove and master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno create a whisky using their very particular sets of skills. Dove pinned down the flavour profile for Edition No. 3 by using the same formula he would for a perfume: pinpointing complementary aromas, and balancing these with a “counterpoint” note. The resulting liquid is a combination of six American and European oak casks, with deliciously sweet, floral notes up front.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed info and/or photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose Reminiscent of a fine fragrance, the nose leads with vanilla ice cream, fresh cut oak and delicate florals. Orange oil provides subtle grandeur while ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg flit in and out in various guises. Vanilla imparts sweetness, leading citrus fruits forward then allowing chocolate to show. Burnished oak delivers a soft ending.

Palate Sweet fruit, vanilla and rich fruit cake with suggestions of apricot, pear and crisp green apple. Hints of ginger and cinnamon are balanced with a light resinous oak finale.

Finish Long, sweet and fruity, leaving a lasting impression on the senses.

Reviews for The Macallan Edition No.3
If you can find it, Try It!
Between This And No.1 ... Really great drams, the nose is amazing and the taste almost matches it.

Really excellent
This is a really excellent tasty interesting scotch. It’s smooth yet flavorful. The florals and oak mix beautifully. It’s not a gimmick. If you enjoy Speyside scotch, this is among the best I’ve had. My favorites are peaty Islay scotch whiskies, and I still find this Macallan to be very interesting and enjoyable because of the wonderful mix of flavors and fantastic aftertaste.

If Glenfarclas made a Macallan Special Edition!
I wasn't sure how this would compare to Edition No. 2 especially with the price increase but man this is easily the best new Macallan bottling I've tried in a while. The nose is nice but the palate and the finish are absolutely beautiful. Lots of baked fruit bread and chocolate on this one, I guess all the quality sherry barrels went into this whisky instead of the Classic Cut! Edition No. 4 better be special if it wants to top this one! For once I can actually say well done Macallan and mean it!

The best aroma, very light taste
I tried a sample of Edition 3. I will admit that I was. It very keen on the idea of a perfume expert working on a Scotch as I did not want to be short changed by having a cheaper Scotch. I will say that this had the best fragrance of any Scotch I have tried. I do think that the palate and taste were very light; many people would love it ut I prefer more flavorful drams.

Very well done
This was given to me as a gift for Christmas. I tend to like peaty scotch Whisky but I was extremely pleased at the wonderful nose. The vanilla and light florals won me over. It finished nicely on the palate. Nicely done!

Not bad.. but
Not bad, little strong fragrance on the nose, love the vanilla, good on the plate leads with vanilla, good finish, long and lasting.

Out of the three special editions.. No 1 by far the most enjoyable, followed by No 3 and then No 2.

Really missed the ball on this one!
I've tried almost everything Macallan has made over the last 7 years including all of the 1824 series and maker edition that was sold in Costco. I have also never written a review but I had to on this one. In short, it taste like cheap perfume and I seriously considered writing Macallan asking them for my money back. You guys need to stay with what you know and stop working with Perfume makers.

slightly disappointed
Did give it a try 5 consecutive evenings; well what shall I say? I am slighly disappointed especially considering that the Edition No 2 is among my TOP3 drams; the Benriach 17 PX sherry cask is the better choice for sherry bomb lovers

The emperor’s new clothes
Looks like a huge marketing gimmick that went totally wrong. Editon No.1 & Edition No.2 were very good. This one is certainly not. A bit citrussy on the nose with an okay finish. Slightly creamish with vanilla. Good for a NAS but lacks robustness and the flavour like No.2.
