The Lost Distillery Company create blended malts which are supposed to represent how whiskies from long-closed distilleries might have tasted, using research to find out as much about them as possible. Awesome. This particular expression is based on information regarding the Lossit distillery, which resided on the Isle of Islay from 1817 to 1867.

Nose

Damp oak, earthy peat and a hearty helping of milk chocolate.

Palate

Cigar box, buttered crumpets, sea salt light hints of basil.

Finish

Remains packed with vanilla and peat.

A little bit of peat and a lot of pepper. Young. Nothing special.

Decent dram but nothing special

This is a decent dram but nothing special. More pepper than peat overall. Light flavours with a lingering peppery finish. A drop of water mellows the flavours even more, leaving but a burst of pepper to finish. This is not anywhere near the level of Laphroaig 10 or Ardbeg 10, let alone the higher level whiskies they and other Islay distilleries produce. Therefore, this is not worth the price of a bottle. Nice try but it should be at least 25 pound cheaper for what you get. Similar level to Monkey Shoulder. Decent dram for later in the evening when the taste buds are dulled but you want to keep the session going.

Great in theory, but…

… it’s all about the liquid on the bottle in the end. This is my second bottle by the LDC. First was Dalaruan. The marketing and presentation are both great, very interesting. However the whiskies are young. They have a sharpness to them that cuts through any flavor. Lossit is mild but acrid peat, lemon and barely any sweetness. Water slightly tames it but also mutes a lot of flavor. Shame.

Pretty bottle, solid whisky

Nose: Roasted pear, dried plums, lemon peel, mild pipe tobacco smoke. Taste: Damp wood furniture, spicy oak, tobacco, a mix of medicinal and botanical notes and a hint of smoke. Finish: A little bit of fireplace ash, grass clippings, hospital rags, dry choking sensation - much like after a dry wine. The finish is on the short side. Overall it's a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect much from it and bought it because it was on sale yet it tastes good and balanced. I would have liked a bit more sweetness in the aftertaste. Of course there's no way to know how the real Lossit offerings tasted like, but i feel like this is better than anything they produced originally. It's a solid whisky, great presentation, and as an Islay fan I can say this is worth giving a shot.
