The second batch of That Boutique-y Whisky Company's Japanese Blended Whisky is here! It's made exclusively with Japanese malt and grain whiskies aged for at least 21 years, and has been bottled at 47.7% ABV with a very handsome label. Delicious stuff, this is.
Batch 2 is a release of 1,799 bottles.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition whiskies from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
Dark muscovado sugar and vanilla are quickly followed by touches of mulch and earth. Plenty of husky, refined malt form a core which dates, toasted raisins and syrupy plums arise from. The result? Dark, deep fruit notes among a milky latte underlay.
A wonderfully balanced mix of charred oak, subtle peppery spices and dried barley lead. Plum walnut cake, tiramisu and black fruits emerge, while roasted espresso bean and chestnut notes simmer sway beneath.
Uncompromising, dense oak, burnt toast and a recurring fresh maltiness maintain throughout the lengthy finish.

It’s not a bad whisky, but it’s not £175.00 good. Secondly just because it’s made in Japan and it’s 21 years old does not mean it commands this type of price after all I can get an amazing 21 Y/O blended whisky made here in Scotland that’s worth every drop of its asking price. Now on to the tasting. It has quite a mineral character to it with a slight soft note of smoke and it has a salinity to it with soft oak popping up it’s head but not with any tannins that you might expect in a older whisky, it’s really soft almost oily and has a ozone taste like from a marine environment (may be it was matured near a cost in Japan ???) anyway it’s finish is spicy and dies down with notes of wood and I’d agree with chestnut and pepper with Master Of Malts Palate tasting but no where do I get Plum or Tiramisu or even espresso as well as toasted raisins or syrup because it’s not really sweet it’s quite salty on the back end so black fruits don’t come into it for me. In fairness taste is subjective but these flavours are so far removed from what I can pick up and I’ve been drinking whisky for 57 years and I’m 72 now so that must count for something. In the end this really hurt when I found out that it’s worth no where near the asking price, even with fuel duty and VAT tax it’s uncalled for. I’m thoroughly disappointed with this and it’s bloated price.
Very nice, punchy, interesting - but my issue is, is it 4 X times as tasty as a £45 bottle. I don't think so. Id give you ? £130 for a 70cl bottle ?

Hibiki like, much to like, except for one thing, the price. Like virtually everything Japanese and of age statement this isn’t cheap. Worth it on a one off basis.
