This is a sixteen year old Strathisla from Douglas Laing's Old Malt Cask range. Strathisla is one of the oldest Highland distilleries with a heritage stretching back to 1786 when it was founded under the name Milltown.
The Old Malt Cask range began as a release of fifty bottlings in 1998 to commemorate Douglas Laing's fiftieth anniversary. Today they offer many, many more. All bottlings in the range are non-chill filtered and contain no naughty colouring.
Raisins and straw fight it out until grassy peat notes slowly filter up.
Fresh cut grass, currants and raisins hold the foreground whilst something smoky lurks in the background.
The peat is a tad more prominent on the finish yet it is vanilla and chocolate that close this dram.
Dried fruit complexity, grassy freshness and the faint presence of peat; this is a winner.
