Smokehead has gone and finished its Islay single malt Scotch whisky (from an undisclosed distillery) in casks that have previously held Caribbean rum! If you're a fan of salty and sweet flavour combinations, you're in for a treat.
Clear Islay smoke arrives first, with a touch of seaweed in there, before hints of BBQ pineapple and fresh mango develop.
Enjoyably savoury and briny at first, but once again, tropical fruit and cola cube sweetness attempts to wrestle control.
Waxy orange and vanilla, with the final smoky embers of a beach bonfire.
Previously had single malt and sherry cask so wanted this to have a go. I don't know if I had a bad bottle or is this a bad whisky. Can't pick anything from the nose except smoke the palate is oak and alcohol. Almost like a new make.... Considering the price this is not worth your time. Will not try again.
Here's to your dad. This is a terrific sip for the price. Not many rum finished malts with this mich peatiness. Ardbeg could release something like this and it would be lapped up.
My Dad was a WW2 submariner and of course his favourite tipple was rum. I can't stand the stuff - gives me heartburn. Today ((9th January) is the 81st anniversary of the sinking of his submarine (HMS Starfish) and I thought I'd raise a toast to my Dad and his submarine. Couldn't face straight rum so this was a compromise! Not disappointed with this at all - I could become a rum drinker by default! I think my Dad would have like it too!
