A high-ABV variation on the classic Smokehead Islay single malt, Smokehead High Voltage is described as an "all-out attack" on your senses by its producer. Which, y'know, sounds pretty intense. If you're a fan of heavily-peated whisky, this'll be right up your street.
Also, yes, it was incredibly hard to resist making an Electric Six reference when writing this bottling note.
Burnt biscuits, dried earth and a kick of black pepper.
Oily barley and intense campfire smoke, with a hint of brown sugar underneath.
Sea salt, oat cakes and smoked paprika.
I tried the original Smokehead and was underwhelmed, but this elevates the flavors and not just because of the high alcohol content.Really enjoyed this, charcoal, sweetness, smokey, maybe not subtle but extremely tasty, similar to big hitters like Mactalla Mara!
When Smokehead first was available in my local supermarket, the 40% version I was underwhelmed, this however is more to my liking, charcoal, more mouth exploding flavors, some fruitiness, the contents of this bottle far outweigh the design and artwork rather than the opposite. This has echoes of Elements of Isay Bourbon Cask but with more smoke and less subtle,I like this.
The Best Smokehead I've tried. Heavy peat but also great added flavours. The high ABV really kicks off in your mouth. Perfect.
Blerg!!! My (non drinking) Husband brought this home, brought me a glass, I was expecting my usual and nearly spat out the first taste. Informed him it tasted like a lump of burnt peat had been left in the bottle, it was undrinkable, it tasted like a smoke damaged apartment smells after the fire brigade have hosed it down, and could he take it back to the shop? He looked a bit shamefaced and said ‘probably not - I think it pretty much does what it says on the label’ True that. Still awful.
I do not really see what all the fuss is about. The overwhelming alcohol bite masks a lot of the initial notes and underwhelming smokeyness leaves my taste buds rather confused as to what is going on inside this bottle. Not for me. Not a terrible Whiskey by any means but, for the cost, you can definitly buy better alternatives!
