Scottish Leader Reviews

Really-really good for this price range. If not the best.

I was never into mass-market <=20€ whiskies, and Scottish Leader always looked especially suspicious to me. But then I was totally surprised by Ralfy reviewing it (the one with the previous label with the deer on it) and giving it a rather positive blend mark. So I bought one for my country-house as a backup malt, should I suddenly run out of single-malts. And then at some point I opened it, and I must say I cannot stress enough how seriously good blend this is for THIS price range. This honestly beats several single malts I've had in the past, and most certainly beats most blends I've had. Its catch is in the perfect mellow balance and that slightest smoke/ash in the background. Ian MacMillan has done a really great job with this whisky and I cannot recommend it enough for anybody who cannot really afford much whiskies above 30€ or so. And even though I still continue exploring the world of single malts, I still look forward to those weekends at the country-house where I can just take it a little easy with Scottish Leader and rest my tongue. It is especially good to start with and then have a single malt next. Good job, Scottish Leader!

Great Scotch. Thank you Scottish Leader

I usually drink House of Stuart or McGregors. Love this Scottish Leader. Put it above the other two. Smoother. I mix it with tonic water.

Wonderful whiskey at this price, it's quite smooth and easy in throat. I really like the Smoky flavor of it.

Needs to be coupled with a steak.

You need to be eating a steak with this. It is too salty to be drinking alone in my opinion. Great value though if you like steak. 3 Star with a steak and 1.5 on its own.

Pleasant, slightly sweet, nice!

Surprisingly pleasant, a touch of honey & no horrible roughness. It must rank with the best at the price

Truly awful.

Never have I had such a disgraceful excuse for a whisky. Bland in the extreme.

Remarkable whiskey. Taste is strong and my head warm up after the first 50gr. Taste is alike Teachers to me. For this price there are others too but not as good.

Superb Blended Whisky For The Price.Try It.

Over 12 Months I have bought this new designed bottle of Scottish Leader three times and it has surprised Me how good and consistent it is for the price. A slight hint of smoke and peat with a slight sweet taste. The blenders are spot on with this whisky and I rate it one of the best blends especially at the price it is in supermarkets at approx. £13.This is a bargain price for such a quality Whisky. Try It and You will be surprised.

scottish leader big surprise.

well, my stepson gave me a bottle of scottish leader as i have been doing some work for him. i had never come across it before maybe because i'm not big into blended whisky. well, what a pleasant surprise, it has a real quality about it. over the course of a few days or nights i had a couple of glasses and can say that this is a superb whisky. when i googled it to find out about it i couldn't believe the price. less than 13 quid a bottle. rediculous!!!!
in my humble opinion this is now the whisky of choice for me at this sensational price as it is so affordable. i didn't notice the honey flavour thankfully as i don't like anything sweet.
gentlemen and ladies, do yourselves a favour, go out and try some, you will be pleasantly surprised......

If you really looking for an enjoyable cheap whisky, this is it! I bought this for almost half of the master of malt price on taxfree and I can't figure how it could be so cheap. Better than black velvet, teacher's and lauder's in my opinion.

24th September 2016

Delicious. Almost sweet
Preferred it with a dash of water which really opened out the flavours

13th September 2016

For the price, the best blended I have tried.

Each to there own, I have tried many malts and very many blended and this is by far the best blended I have tried. It even beats J. Walker's black label and Chivas Regal both of which cost many £ more. It rates equal to the cheaper malts, Glen Grant Major's Reserve and Glen Moray. But as I say this is just my opinion and taste.

Good find

I came across Scottish Leader while in a supermarket and not having heard about it or seen it before thought I would give it a go. Big surprise... it punches well above its weight and is indeed, as it says on the bottle, smooth and slightly sweetish . It lacks some of the complexity that I associate with west coast whiskeys but is also free of the rough edges of some other entry level blends.

A very smooth dram and a cracker at this price point.

Recently I chanced into a local independent outlet looking for a good Single Malt (my favorite) and noticed this attractive hexagonal bottle on the shelf. On inspection I noticed it was a "Blended" Scotch...arrgh. It was priced at A$80 and stated it is aged over 15 years so I thought - what the heck - I,ll give it a go.
It is the best whisky that has graced my lips - bar none!

Scottish Leader (Aged over 15 years) Hexaganol bottle.

Normally, a die-hard "Single Malt"Scotch drinker...
This particular Whisky is ABSOLUTELY the better for the ageing process.
Not quite the full body of a Single Malt (Due to the other grains) it is an excellent Blended Scotch. Very smooth and drinkable....Congratulations to the distillers!

Smells and tastes like Laphroig. but 50% cheaper.

Very good blended whisky, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to blends but this is worth it.

Great Value Whisky,Changed For The Better.

This Whisky has always been good value at approx around £13 in Supermarkets.I bought this new designed bottle recently and was amazed at how good it now is with a hint of peat & smoke. This whisky has changed for the better even though it was not bad before.I will now consider 'Scottish Leader' more now when I need a new bottle. It is worth a try now and you may be suprised.

26th May 2016

Has it changed?

I bought a bottle now in April 2016 and there's a peaty note that I don't remember from before. It's amazingly good for the price! But I don't remember any peat in previous bottlings. I was impressed by them, but this is even better!

A True Leader!!

This whisky has been off the shelves for a while in South Africa, and has been recently introduced back into the market. Scottish Leader has been rebranded and repackaged and comes in other variants as well, but this review is all about the Original. To be honest, I was very excited to purchase and could not wait to taste what I remembered to be a very pleasant entry level whiskey. Boy, was I surpised. The colour, nose, complexity of flavours and smokiness had all changed, and for the better! I have no idea what the rest of the "connoisseurs" on this page have been drinking or are referring to, but Scottish Leader has become a firm favourite in my household. I've even left some more famous (and more expensive) whiskies in my untouched in my cabinet and opted for this week after week in front of the braai. Cheers to an amazing, affordable whisky. 5 stars for flavour, smokiness and amazing value for money! Top-notch!

14th October 2015

Scottish power

I'll keep this short and sweet, much like the finish of this whisky.
Tescos sell it for £12.70 and for the price it's pretty Damn good. Some good lemon and smoke notes, plus if you add a drop of Laphroaig to it, the Scottish leader really comes into its own.

Some Lessons are Hard to Learn

Unfortunately whn is come to learning what a bad whisky 'is' this lesson is not just hard but tastes bad going down. Seriously, why waste your money just buy a 'real' whisky like Glenlivet. It is not great but about the same price and actually tastes like whisky.
For a better description of the whisky see the review titled 'A caramel swamped horror.' It is about 15 reviews down. Not the one with all the ???????????? he's an idiot!

24th January 2015

From the middle of Southern Africa

Price is reasonable for blended whiskey. More of a brandy guy myself but this is not bad. You still can't taste all the stuff they want you to taste at the distillery but its better than all the other blended stuff on the shelves. Mixes well with sodas which is a plus in my book. Chances that you will disappointed are low. This is MY PERSONAL OPINION!

30th August 2014

Very pleasantly surprised!

I drink single malts at home, but often take a bottle of blended whisky with me when I am working away from home. I bought this out of curiosity, and was very pleasantly surprised. This whisky will be my companion on trips away from now on. Five stars (Six if you take the price into account.)

Scottish Leader

The best Whisky I have ever tasted!

23rd August 2014

Judged by the reviews on this site, this whisky is very overrated!

I was looking for a cheap whisky to take to Glastonbury and following the reviews on this site I was encouraged to buy Scottish Leader. Now maybe I just bought a bad bottle, and I'd add that although I'm a big whisky/ey enthusiast I am no single malt snob! Most of the whiskies I drink are Deluxe Blended Scotch's but this stuff is woeful. An unpleasant off wine nose, a taste that suggests the over-use of average quality casks and not much taste other than a trace of caramel and then a bitter finish. Very disappointing. Now for £12.70 from Tesco I wasn't expecting something incredible but certainly something of quality for its price range. It simply isn't comparable to the not much more expensive (but excellent) BNJ, and similarly priced Grants, Hankey Bannister and Dewars White Label (and they are all a bit rough round the edges). Even the new Black Bottle, which is no way near as good as the old but is still a good quality product (and from the same distillery as Leader) beats this poor effort. Avoid IMHO and spend an extra £4-5 on BNJ!

A Great Scottish Whisky

I would normally drink single malts but my wife won a bottle of this stuff at the local bingo group. I must admit, i was most pleasantly surprised as i tasted my first sip, & after my second i realised just how good it really is, since this, "Scottish Leader" has become one of my favourite whiskies of all time, i would have no hesitation in recommending this whisky to anyone, an excellent whisky at a very good price.

12th January 2014

One of the best blended whiskies around

I generally drink single malts and have travelled around the distilleries so I know where this originates from and what it is made of.
With a mixer/water or on its own it has never disappointed.
I'd recommend this blended whisky to anyone especially as it is priced at a very competitive rate.

23rd November 2013

so smooth

Awesome... 4.5 stars

30th September 2013

Very impressive.

Forgot to rate.

27th July 2013

Very impressive

Certainly the best value blend on the market. The 5 star rating is relative to the price, which is£12.70 at Tesco.

For a cheaper whisky this is surprisingly good has nice sweet smokey aftertaste it's actually nicer than some of the dearer options yeah 4 stars for this!

Clearly I am in the middle of drinking this as I forgot to rate it 9/10 as not as good as glen anything.

Oops, another one who's had one too many drams. I went and forgot to score the Leader! 10/10!!

Top of the Leader Board!!

I love Scottish Leader, I always make sure I have a few bottles in the house for guests and myself. There's nothing better than a day spent in the bath accompanied by a large dram of leader!

21st April 2013

A caramel swamped horror.

The label describes this blend as 'sweet'. That's an understatement. It's rather like an alcoholic liquid form of McCowan's Highland Toffee. When I was rash enough to order a 70ml double of this noxious substance in a Glasgow pub recently, I couldn't decide which was more horrifying, the caramel-swamped flavour or the fact that a portion of Deanston's admirable single malt has vanished into the abyss of this witches brew.

forgot to rate the dram in above report-- Giving it 8 out of ten

BNJ's not so poor cousin? Perky acetone nose reminds me of Jura Origin- (kind of a hypey name is J.O.)-- But the flavour aspects remind me of The Baillie Nicol Jarvie blend- BNJ has become hard to find- even in Edinburgh- where it's blended- and where I live (over the river from Leith-Edinburgh)- If I can find it- here in Fife- it hurts my humble budget- So-- I was really pleased to discover Highland Leader as a decent and easily sourced alternative-- It's more than just about in same league--

The best young whisky I've had so far

I'm no expert, but I have had my fair share of young (3-5 year-) whiskies, and this is head and shoulders above the rest (though I do like Glen Ross and James King). What's interesting is that the nose is decidely not medinical as is standard for cheaper fare. Moreover, it has a surprising smokey edge that is quite pleasant. For its category I'd give it 5 stars, but I'm giving it 4 in deference to the top line whiskies. And actually, Scottish Leader is better than some of the expensive whiskies. Kudos to the Burn Stewart Distillery!
