Big Peat's gone and got himself a trusty sidekick in the shape of a dapper Fox Terrier wearing a monocle! Scallywag from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.
Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.
The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.
A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.
Incredibly pleasant, the Scallywag is an absolute treat in every sense.

I bought this because the dog on the bottle looks exactly like my beloved pooch! Well to my surprise it did not disappoint! I cannot get enough of it. It’s incredibly hard to find but once it’s available I will buy as many bottles as I can get. Great value for the money. The taste is pleasant and it rivals more expensive blends.
Nose:Iodine Palate:Smoke (very smooth granted) Finish:Peat Don’t be fooled, This is not reflective of Speyside one jot. There is no sweetness, stewed fruit, Xmas cake et al. What they’ve done with this batch is anyone’s guess, the only high point, the dog on the label? Have been drinking whisky for nearly 40 years, tried 100’s of bottles, and this (a birthday present) is one of the most disappointing. If you want a sherried whisky, stick to something like Nomad/Glen Moray sherried/port finish etc.
Bought this for a contribution to a regular whisky tasting with an “independent bottler” theme, and was not disappointed. As other people have said - rich, sweet and spicy with a hint of marmalade. Will be re-buying, and trying the rest of the range on the back of this.
god dam this is fantastic!!!, if you like Fennel. This taste amazing until the massive Fennel wave takes over. Fennel is not my jam, but this is absolutely amazing until the Fennel takes over. If you enjoy black licorice, this is your dram
What a lovely bottle of whisky! A random buy and so glad we bought this, me and my partner argue over this bottle as it’s so nice! Very flavourful, fragrant and very enjoyable over ice, if you like this you will also like the epicurean so maybe worth a try!
