Big Peat's gone and got himself a trusty sidekick in the shape of a dapper Fox Terrier wearing a monocle! Scallywag from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.
Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.
The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.
A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.
Incredibly pleasant, the Scallywag is an absolute treat in every sense.

Great vatted malt, excellent value like all Douglas Laing products. To me a must try , again and again......
I find this to be a pretty solid blend. The taste shows a bit of immaturity, and it actually has some notes that make it seem like there's a fair bit of grain whisky. However, it is in fact a blended malt. It's a very rounded and drinkable Speyside. I would prefer a bit more age on it, but it's certainly a quality whisky at its price point. Benefits from a few minutes resting in the glass. Great artwork and a wonderful gift for the casual or novice whisky drinker. Hats off to the Douglas Laing folks for having a quality blended malt, at 46%, with an affordable price! Rating for the actual taste of the whisky, but 4.5 stars all around. :)
Awesome fragrance, smooth taste and sweet endings. Wonderful whiskey at a reasonable price. Must buy.
Speyside exemplar.
I had tried this in the past at a "Whisky Lounge" Indie Night and liked it although I think it was overshadowed by some of the other Whiskies on offer that night. I recently got a bottle as a gift and it much nicer than I remembered, very smooth and extremely nice, you can tell it has a bit of Macallan in there - Really nice.
