    Scallywag

Big Peat's gone and got himself a trusty sidekick in the shape of a dapper Fox Terrier wearing a monocle! Scallywag from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.

    Palate

The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.

    Finish

A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.

    Overall

Incredibly pleasant, the Scallywag is an absolute treat in every sense.

    Not a favourite

I was very disappointed with Scallywag,I honestly think it's one of the worst whiskies I've ever had the misfortune to taste,I don't know about sweetness,I got mine of that on the contrary I got a bitter aftertaste.I actually got an aroma of chocolate biscuits.

It is on the young side and the flavours could be more obvious BUT !

Initial thoughts were that this was a bit young with little character but when I got into it I began to pick up the subtle flavours including cinnamon and vanilla.

    Beautifully rich fruit and malt

One of the best blends I've tried, great flavours and an outstanding sweet / savoury balance. Sweet orange, apricot and peach are met with malty notes of flour and sawdust, fading to a dry, nutty finish. Surprisingly viscous; smoothness which coats the mouth.

    Candidate for worst ever whiskey

Nose: Rotting leaves. Palate: Bitter...horrid. After: More horrid.

    David Daly Dec 1, 2020

    Flat fall

Very pleasant on the nose with sweetness and typical Speyside notes, then falls flat and even becomes unpleasant.
