This edition of Retribution English whisky was matured in a single Oloroso hogshead (cask W006), which has dialled the spirit toward rich fruit and nutty sweetness while letting the creamy new make character shine through. Maris Otter malt from Warminster Maltings replaces Laureate here, and it shows its worth, adding depth that plays brilliantly with direct-fired copper pot distillation. The release is limited to 370 bottles, filled to 53% ABV.
Black cherries, sultanas and raspberry jam, then walnut cake, vanilla custard, malt biscuit and a touch of orange oil.
Sticky toffee pudding and dates soaked in sherry. Hazelnut praline, cocoa nibs, and Demerara follow, with cinnamon, clove and a hint of leather. The underlying spirit stays creamy and cereal-rich.
Dark chocolate, cherry stones and toasted nuts with a final waft of dried orange and sweet oak.
