Powers Gold Label Bottling Note

Powers Gold Label is a classic Irish whiskey, introduced in 1791 by John Power & Son. Once a single pot still whiskey, it's long since been a blend of pot still and grain whiskeys. Powers have reintroduced single pot still Irish whiskey to their range, however, with their John's Lane Release.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Super sweet shortbread notes, with honeysuckle and tangerine peel.

Palate: Buttery shortbread, cereal, pears and a little milk chocolate.

Finish: Short and mouthwatering, the spices shine through in waves with honey lingering to the end.

Powers Gold Label Reviews

Not the Powers that be.

Not the Powers of historic memories, notes of strong alcohol and little else nearly burning my nostrils. On tasting quite smooth initially but lingering burning aftertaste. Normally a single malt guy but due to cost of living etc thought I'd give it a bash. Definitely not be revisiting unless the master distiller gets a word in his ear.

In the running

for the best Irish Whiskey I've ever tried/had.
Wonderful spice throughout, lingering in the finish well beyond the sweet honey & grainy cereal notes. Balanced & exceptionally tasty. Not offered here often enough so whenever I do see a bottle, I'll be sure to pick one up! Worth having as a regular staple on my Irish Whiskey shelf.

Decent

To my palate, this is great, for the price. Seems a bit livelier and more going on than the Jamieson's offerings. Sippable but also comes through well in a mixed drink. For the price I'd probably go to this before a lot of the mainstream blends.

Decent but not premium or polished enough

Have to say I hold Powers in high regard. The ordinary stuff is top notch. Was intrigued by the Gold label version. But it is much too harsh. Burns as it goes down. The ordinary Powers, which I like, is much more smooth and enjoyable. Gold label carries fruity notes with a hint of caramel but strangely has a burning taste at the end, so the finish misses big time.

Grab it if you can!

Reviewing the discontinued 43.2% version. Bought the last? four bottles in "OZ" @ $AU 72 each last week. Look, this stuff wouldn't blow any one's mind, but at its price point there is very little competition that satisfies to the same degree. I suspect the new version is fully chill-filtered meaning there will be a loss of fatty acids (oiliness). And also at 40% Alc/Vol, flavour will be diminished. Sad to see this trend becoming a lot more prevalent within the last 20 years. A word of advice : - Never change a product unless it is an improvement.

This Powers is a huge disappointment.

What happened? I've bought Powers for years, although I don't know that it was Gold Label. However, I was totally confident when I bought this new squat bottle of Powers Gold Label. Am no expert, but quote another who said in 2019: "Maybe I got a bad batch because it wasn't at all what others here describe. Mine was relatively tasteless and lots of alcohol burn." In other words, flavorless with almost no scent, but "hot." Wish I could get my $$ back as I'm on a budget!

Better used for hot whiskey

This can be quite an attack on the palate compared to the likes of Jameson. Very spicy and a slight burn to the finish with this one. Better used for a hot whiskey or with a mixer.

Powers is the best!

Having been an Irish Whiskey drinker for about 40 years this has to be my favourite. They're all good, but this is just that bit better than the rest, in my opinion, of course!
