Powers John's Lane 12yo Bottling Note

A single pot still release of Powers whisky. It's matured in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks, and named after the distillery where it was first made, now sadly closed.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Barley, copper, fresh oak, leather, and juicy fruit.

Palate: Very smooth with vanilla, dry spice, chocolate and coffee. There is dark fruit here too, raisins and blackcurrants.

Finish: More vanilla and drying copper notes.

Overall: A very well balanced whiskey with not a note out of place. Lovely.

Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Reviews

This arrived at the second time of asking, thanks to DPD for breaking the first bottle. I’m not a connoisseur or an expert of any description when it comes to whiskeys, I like what I like.
This is simply gorgeous, lovely caramel and butterscotch flavours with a long lingering warmth.
I’m a fan of Red Breast, to me, this is just a tiny bit better.
I’ll be back for more, ready for Christmas, if we have one !

as a lover of redbreast 12, im not sure i dont prefer this

lots of fruit in here along with bourbon styled vanilla and pepper. blackcurrent, sherry and the odd metallic note. a half teaspoon tops of 02 opens and smooths this even further.
as a lover of redbreast 12, im not sure i dont prefer this.... never thought i'd say that.

I've been on a quest to try as much as Irish whiskey as I can get my hands on and this might just be my favorite I've tried so far. Now I am already a fan of all the Power's whiskies but this has to be the best of the bunch and I think the sherry influence is really what sets it apart. On the nose honey, yogurt and juicy red berries with a hint of caramelized sugar. On the palate loads of vanilla yogurt with raisins , caramelized banana, a bit of baking spices as well as some milk chocolate with a nice medium-long finish and oily mouthfeel. Spectacular example of the Irish pot still style finished in a sherry cask. And it's bottled at 46% giving you the ability to add some water and really open it up. Remarkable stuff , Power's never dissapoints. Slainte!

Punches well above its weight

I have ordinarily steered clear of Single Pot Still whiskey because of an aversion to the concept of un-malted barley. This may have been a fallacy. Of course there will be differences compared to wholly-malted barley styles. Having said that, I am more open minded to different taste profiles as a result of germination or otherwise. There is only one word to describe P.J.L.R. 12., ------------Delectable!

One of the best Irish whiskeys around great taste and smooth worth a try any day

9th May 2020

Best reasonably priced Irish Whiskey

I tried this about 5 years ago and wasn’t too impressed but I was new to whiskey then. Since I have went from liking very mellow Irish and Japanese whiskeys to discovering the likes of Red Breast my favourite before this. The only other whiskey I would say I prefer over this is Midleton Barry Croket but that’s 3 times the price.
I am no whiskey connoisseur but to me it’s fruity vanilla to the nose then warming to taste with a lingering spice.
Definitely one of my favourites but much more body and spice to so it if you are new to whiskey as I was it might not be a instant match

My first tasting of this particular Powers and it has really impressed me. Not at all what I expected. Smooth and creamy and very easy to drink. I would recommend that any Irish whiskey can give this one a go.

3rd March 2020

My son bought this for me from Dublin.
I have got to say I absolutely love it , smooth
And warming.

8th May 2019

Incredibly strong taste and very smooth as well

I'm a big fan of redbreast cask strength which is incredible. This is either second of joint second will yellow spot.

This whiskey has a really strong taste and yet it really is incredibly good. The after taste is particularly good. Definitely try it late at night.

Just one last thing. Powers... I'm Irish. I was never a fan of your standard whiskey (sorry). But top marks for this. Keep pushing, dreaming and creating. Powers John Lane is one of the reasons I have become so proud of Irish whiskeys again.

13th November 2018

Apologies, but I just don't understand all those high marks.
I tried it in 2013 and again few days ago... Completely different whiskeys! I don't know what happened-poor batch, poor casks, overblended?
It tastes thin, no complexity at all, woody, solventy, some vanilla… definitely no sherry cask influence. Gets better after few min in the glass and some water (below 40%).

There are better Irish whiskies at similar price.

3rd November 2018

A world-class whiskey

Classic single pot still style... thick, rich and delicious. This is one of the great whiskeys of the world... Varying barrels during aging is one the secrets to great Irish whiskeys... and the Oloroso casks which are used by only a handful of distilleries add amazing depth, subtle sweetness and character... Good value at the $50 price point... grab a bottle if you can find it!

Better than best

8th May 2018

super tasty

I'm not knowledgeable or experienced in whiskies, and by whisky I mean everything - scotch, rye, bourbon, whisky - so take this with a grain of salt, but to date this is my favorite one. I've had Balvenie Caribbean Cask, which is good, and I've had some upper-end highland (and lowland) scotches when I was in Edinburgh (I'm assuming they were "upper-end" since the price tags were a couple hundred euros per bottle), but of all these John's Lane remains my favorite.

7th May 2018

Five stars

I meant five stars not 4.5. But I was enjoying so much finger slipped

10th April 2018

Best Irish Whiskey??

This is a fantastic whiskey. If you like whiskey aged in sherry casks, this is the one. So rich and flavorful w/o the burnt smoky flavor that overpowers some scotches. I don’t know where to start with all the malty dried fruit flavor descriptions. This (with yellow spot close behind) is my favorite Irish whiskey at the moment. And yes, I have every Redbreast (ex the 25) and like them all too well enough. But this one is truly unique. I put it in among my favorite 18 year old to 25 year old favorite single malts — and not one of them is under $100.

10th April 2018

A must own for any Irish Whiskey enthusiast.

Like Green Spot and Redbreast 12yr, Powers John's Lane too is a darn near perfect Irish Pot Still... and because it's 46%, and just a tad bit more expensive, I prefer it over both.

26th March 2018

Better than Redbreast

Smooth and spicy. Notes of vanilla, caramel, and fruit

10th March 2018

Simply beautiful.

I wouldn't recommend it to the novice whiskey aficionados or heavy Scotch fans. This expression is different from anything I've tasted so far.
It is complex and you will have more fun tasting it if you already know bourbon and other grain whiskeys, together with some single malts.
On the nose it starts like super glue. Hold on, that can't be pleasant, right? But it is. It brings a nice memories of when I used to build model planes with my Dad, many moons ago. Then, the nose is somewhat of a heavy bourbon vanilla, spices, the thing that comes to my mind is brown, thick piece of leather. You immediately want to taste it.
On the taste, it starts sweet and then develops this nice and relatively spicy pepper note towards the finish. No, it's not an alcohol burn, it's actual pepper, I compared it with an actual spice.
Ralfy of YT fame, did the review some time ago, claiming that this whiskey was, lemme quote "engineered". Yes, it is and I love that fact! The tastes appear one by one in a particular order, what you get is like a short story of whiskey, starting from bourbon and then finishing at peppery note and oak. In between, dark tastes of dry fruits and quite pleasant gluey note always in the background.
All kept together in harmony. Whoever designed this is a master distiller of a galactic proportions.
Even the empty glass gives some captivating notes of tobacco and malt.

The only problem I have with this whiskey is where do I go from there without seriously ruining my pocket? I bought it for 65 euro in the local supermarket and in fairness, nothing even comes close to it in this price range.

29th January 2018

Very peppery with lovely flavours.

Very peppery, lovely long glow with very pleasant flavor and nose. As a peat lover this is going to be the odd non peat bottle in my collection, although i doubt it will last long.

9th December 2017

Damn Excellent

Damn Excellent....hard to believe I actually like an Irish Whisky

4th December 2017

Pot Still King

When thinking of Irish Pot Still styles, people will always recommend Redbreast 12 or Green Spot but my personal choice would be the Powers Johns Lane. Excellent expression of the style and much more inviting than it's brothers of style. Sweet, smooth and well rounded flavours. Honey, Vanilla and Toffee with a peppery back end. A must have

19th November 2017

The best Irish whiskey bar none

Sweet, spicy, peppery, full of flavour. Wonderful

25th June 2017

Mid to upper range, pretty damn smooth, it's my go to

29th May 2017

More like Bourbon, if you like that sort of thing.

It's quite acrid & burny, plus unless u like ur Pot Stilled to taste like a Bourbon I'd advise u avoid!

Also it's marketed at the Yankee Tourist to boot, what with all that over the top nostalgia trip stuff on the box & leaflet that your probably paying extra for.

But hay opinion is objective & we all have our own.

13th May 2017

Taoiseach of whiskeys.

Just bought another two bottles !
Thankfully it is priced sub £50, it could be priced much higher, its that good !
Don't hang about, just buy.

10th May 2017

Profound Experience

A truly immense whiskey with hints of thick tobacco and dry spiciness. Coffee, chocolate, with a short burst of vanilla... it's the reason I drink whiskey encapsulated in this bottle. Sublime.

9th May 2017

Power to the Johns Lane, exceptional whiskey.

Tried many different Irish whiskeys over the last 25 years.
Feckin, Tullamore, Wild Geese, Bushmills, Writers Tears, Jameson, Redbreast, Green Spot, Paddy, Powers Gold Label/Johns Lane, and many more.
My favourite cheap end whiskey is Paddy, and top end is Powers Johns Lane.
Ciroc is a top vodka.
Metaxa 5,7,12 star, are very good, or the Private Reserve is exceptional.

12th April 2017

One of the finest whiskeys in the world. Thick, Smooth, rich, oily and delicious, a phenomenal sipping whiskey and an absolutely outstanding example of the widely admired single pot still whiskey style. Very much worth searching for!

18th March 2017

Always Irish over Scotch!

Trying a glass in downtown Chicago! Lovely!

3rd February 2017

Best Irish Whiskey . Ever .

My friend introduced me in his home . To this day, when I taste it , I hear Angels sing . It comes very near + dear . To be enjoyed at length , certainly not in a hurry or (God forbid) w/ ice .

5th December 2016

My favourite!!!

I first tasted this in a restaurant in Oughterard in Galway - sublime! As a newbie to the delights of whiskey I fell in love with this! My darling husband searched high and low to find it somewhere and came up with you! I keep it though for special dinners and guests who appreciate something special !

16th November 2016

Excellent with quite a kick

21st August 2016

Cambridge Whisky Nut says:

Simply the best Irish Whiskey I've ever encountered... So full of dried fruit and honeyed notes - and unlike many other Irish whiskeys, it's not subtle on the nose and taste! Its aromas are extremely present while being smooth altogether. A heck of an experience this whiskey. A must have on your whisky shelf!

28th July 2016

The best Ireland has to offer

Recently travelled to Ireland and tried as many different whiskeys as I could. This one was the best and the only one I brought home with me. Will not disappoint!

15th July 2016

Bang for your buck!

Great value and the reason I've fallen for Irish whiskey. Smooth, peppery, spicy and really well balanced.

17th May 2016

Smooth as they get, with a bourbon sweetness

This stuff is really really good. Like gold in a glass if I had to describe it.
I'm not usually a Irish drinker, but after reading reviews and seeing the bottle in my local shop I couldn't resist. It is so tasty with such a nice flavor profile.
Nose: sweet bourbon, vanilla, chocolates, and oak
Palate: smooth, sweet, and savory. The bourbon taste still sticks out to me.
Finish: copper, vanilla, and love

This is a good whisky. Reason why I didn't give it a 10 is because I am out looking for different flavors. This one reminds me a little of a very well tamed bourbon.

11th April 2016

Like a cuddle in a glass

Slowly envelopes you in loveliness.

18th February 2016

It is a slightly peppery version of the already outstanding Powers whiskey. Will be on my corn flakes in the morning if I win the lottery.

7th February 2016

Irish whiskey

Really smooth; it has all the subtle sweet kick of a great Irish whiskey and the subtle but full aged bourbon finish. Outstanding whiskey.

23rd January 2016

Very Enjoyable

Picked up a bottle from Ace Spirits Craft Beer and Whiskey Boutique in Hopkins, MN.

Pours a gentle amber color. The nose is loaded with scents of vanilla, spice, and leather. Tastes of vanilla, chocolate, spice, and copper with hints of currants and raisins. Wonderfully balanced, with a bit of a spicy (white pepper?) finish. Mild copper notes and more vanilla express themselves the longer it lingers on your tongue.

16th December 2015

Bolder Flavor for my taste absoultely wonderful

I really like my Yellow Spot and what a treat to switch off to this
wonderful deeper flavor whiskey. For me anyway its a treat of perfection.

29th July 2015

I must completely agree with the word Phenomenal

I do love my Redbreast 12 but for a change of pace this was so good it is off the chart.I drink all Irish whiskey neat so it has to be all about quality and this was/is EXCELLENT 5 star and then some.

23rd July 2015

Seriously phenomenal whiskey

For $65 usd I do not think you will find another whiskey with such complex flavor and ultimate smoothness. John lanes release has a end note extremely close to the midleton which is far more than 2x the price stateside. I think I just found my newest go to bottle in my nectar cabinet. I love irish whiskey and this is my 2nd favorite experience yet only following the Jameson rarest vintage which is pure bliss in a bottle. If you are serious about quality this is a must stock piece in your collection and everyone who says they are a irish fan needs to try the jameson rarest its a true pleasure. I always buy the shelf out when I find john lanes from this point forward I will guarntee you it is that beautiful

13th July 2015

Great Value

One of the better Irish Whiskeys out there and for the price it might be the best!

26th June 2015

Mr. Joe

This is what I've been looking for my entire life! Damn good whisky.

23rd March 2015

Not Good Value

A lovely whiskey but it's not £20 per bottle better than standard Powers, Powers Gold Label is a fabulous spicy caramel oily pot still, the 12 year old is good- I was drinking both last Sunday in Dublin and I kept returning to the cheaper Gold Label

11th March 2015

If you like Redbreast, you'll love this

A wonderful flavourful dry spicy oakey citrusy Irish whiskey. I've an open bottle on my shelf for 4 years now that I tipple from occasionally and it holds its flavour really solidly, unlike those expensive smokey Isla whiskies which fade away quickly after opening. If you're useed to Jameson and other sweet sherry-loaded Irish whiskeys you might not take to it.

5th March 2015

Best I have had

love. and lust.
I am trying to track down Cask Strength? yes, that exists.
would compare it to the quality of Booker's 8 yr. bourbon in terms of an Irish that rocks
as hard and as long as a State-side--pardon if this comparison rubs some here the wrong way.
love this juice. reflective bender here. (will make any inlaw visit palatable!)

5th March 2015

The best

Love this works well eating chocolate orange.just amazing always have a bottle of this in the cabnet

21st February 2015

I'm a McKnight. This the best Irish Whiskey period.

7th February 2015

Classic Vintage Whiskey at its Best

I just received a bottle for Father's Day and am looking forward to a good night to open the bottle!

It a whiskey to take you time with in splendid isolation

It a whiskey to take you time with in splendid isolation,
and just enjoy all the splendid flavours.
I had it for my 60th birthday it's the best whiskey I've ever had

21st August 2013

Fantastic whiskey. If you drink Irish pure, you must try this.

11th April 2013

A Shining Star

A must-taste for all those who think that Irish Whiskeys are soft and overly consensual. Fantasticly original taste and richness.

11th February 2013

This gives Midleton a run for it's money

11th November 2012

Quite simply the best Irish Whiskey I have ever tasted. Single pot still at its finest.

31st October 2012

There is nothing out there that is similar to this, this is truly unique and has knocked red breast off my number 1 whiskey
