Discovery is a single malt whisky from New Zealand-based Pokeno distillery. A marriage of spirit matured in first-fill bourbon, oloroso, and PX sherry casks, it's a fruity, sweet, and chocolatey sipper, and will stand out in cocktails too.
Cocoa nibs, dried figs, and cherries, with a touch of treacle and cinnamon.
Warm oak, vanilla, cocoa powder, candied orange peel, and warm spices.
Dried raisins and allspice linger.
As a local New Zealander I have had reservation about our young distilleries but this which is supposedly a 3 year old will open up many eyes to new world whisky. Bittersweet almonds mixed with Black forest gateu. I recommend and will buy again. Very unique flavour profile and you can smell the quality first fill oak in the empty glas. Anything 3.5 stars is very good whisky. its Arran 10yo good not Arran 21yo good.
It's all personal I know, however compared to others I have tasted, Pokeno's nose is a bit weak, Cocoa, Vanilla and cake to me. The taste is not very complex, woody & warm spices in my view with an aftertaste of dried raisins and spices. Overall, 7/10 in each area, 21/30 overall for me
