    Peat's Beast

A beast of a whisky indeed, although it's not without its beauty. Un-chill filtered and bottled at 46% abv, this is very peaty, as you might expect, though not in the realms of the really big hitters like Ardbeg's Supernova. But if you like bonfires on beaches and tarmac on kittens, this is a good one to try.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Crashing waves, wood smoke, ash and tar. A hint of apple and citrus but the peat, unsurprisingly, dominates.

    Palate

A beach barbecue... salt and kippers, a bit of butter and hot pepper spice. Water brings out some of those lighter apple and banana notes but again the phenols are the main event here.

    Finish

This lasts for ages with ash, dark chocolate and pepper riding out over an oily base.

    Overall

A dram that lives up to its name; the beast needs taming with a drop of water but it never gets too compliant.

    Very flat dram

The whisky is obvious very young and lacks character. All you smell is peat. All you taste is sharp, peppery peat, but most of all you taste pure alcohol.. And then it's gone, there is no great aftertaste. It doesn't even come close to Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Talisker or even Bowmore There are much better blends for sale than this single malt. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone and I'm certainly not going to buy it again. After a few experiments I made a mix of +/- 85% Peat's Beast and +/- 15% Johnnie Walker Red Rye Finish. For me this was the best mix. But pure, even with a teaspoon of water, for me it was undrinkeable...

    Young beast without character

Young scotch without age statement. Distillery unknown. Not as peaty as I expected. At least there's no food dye in it, from the looks of it. There's almost nothing in the nose other than the peat. Same with the palate. Lacks the usual woody characteristics I'm used to from 10-12 year old ones. Would not buy again.

    Interesting but ...

I'm an Ardbeg man. Last night we had an enforced late Burns Night with seven guests, one brought a bottle of Peat's Beast, of which I'd never heard. There are too many whiskies for me to know even with my many years of experience. The table was laden with several bottles of single malts (but not my precious Ardbeg) so that people could help themselves and I made the mistake of putting out the Beast alongside them. It was popular and the gannets got through half a bottle between them. And emptied some of the others and a bottle of Taylors Late vintage port. The Beast was palatable and I wouldn't give back another gift but wouldn't buy it for myself. My husband prefers the Ardbeg too ... I've taught him too well. Everyone said how peaty the Beast was. The same was said of all the other whiskies they tried, it's a flavour you can't get away from in most good whiskies. And I still prefer Ardbeg, sorry! It's drier and more biscuity. The Beast was very good with the haggis though, I've never tried Ardbeg with the Great Chieftain.

    young but complicated

Picked this one up as part of a drinks tasting set. Tasting notes are spot on although the peatyness didn't blast me away as expected.
