Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Sherried peels, grassy malt and nutty brown bread. A touch of chocolate sauce in there, too.

Palate: Rich in honey and butterscotch, followed by a light whiff of smoke. Blackberry and raspberry jam.

Finish: Toasty, subtly smoky spices.

Oban 2001 (bottled 2016) Montilla Fino Cask Finish - Distillers Edition Reviews

A good whisky that falls short of its potential

What impresses me about this whisky is the combination of reasonable complexity with a very drinkable dram in which the alcohol is almost completely forgotten until the finish. From that perspective it is very good and, if you were new to whisky, would be a good reason to try this bottle. The nose, palate and finish work well together and complement each other - it's a whisky whose individual components work in tandem to form a really nice whisky experience.

The real downsides for me are the mouthfeel and the finish: the mouthfeel just doesn't live up to the quality of everything else and feels far too thin. There are quite a lot of rich flavors in here but their richness is tapered off because the mouthfeel doesn't give them the platform they deserve. The finish is by no means bad, but it is quite short and, combined with the mouthfeel, leaves the whisky feeling very short-lived (despite the short-lived moments actually being very good). It is a nice whisky, would be a great whisky for a beginner to try or anyone new to sherried whisky, and has a lot going for it. Those looking for a bit extra might be disappointed.

Beautifully crafted single malt!

Wonderful dried fruit aromas with chocolate notes. The taste revealed subtle layers of chocolate, dried figs and apricots with toffee and honey. The finish has light coffee notes and cinnamon. At a friendly get together we paired it with dark chocolate and then Prosciutto and smoked Gouda which made the event all the more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this expression of Oban at any time.

Everything you'd expect from a special edition. Fruity and satisfying in the mouth. Class act from Oban

Warm and inviting

Over the past year and a half after quitting vodka and beers and switching to whisky and trying a multitude of different Scotch whiskies am constantly amazed at how a drink can offer so much variety. This edition I picked as I hadnt tried anything from Oban before and must admit I was surprise expecting a mainland creaminess but finding a rich complex taste warm and spicy with an afterglow body warmth normally reserved for the Islay malts....put your feet up pour and enjoy
