Part of a trio of expressions announced in 2018 (which also included a 12 Year Old and a 20 Year Old), this 16 year old Mortlach single malt is drawn from sherry casks - the rich sweetness complements the intense spirit that the distillery is known for. Expect dark fruit, treacle and punchy Christmas spice notes from this one...
Gingersnaps and orange peel, with hints of roast chestnut, apple and blackcurrant pie and quince.
Mature oak from the outset, joined by prune, clove, macadamia nut and a slight touch of baked earth.
Lingering oily walnut and chewy raisin notes. More ginger appears later on.
Taking on a journey towards better distilleries, deeper flavours and older aged creations has left me with some question marks. Some were spectacular like the GlenAllachie and Sherry Kavalan but some of the glorified distilleries reminded me some supermarket 15 year olds like the glenfiddich or the MacAllan 12. Simple drinks that serve their purpose. Trying this Mortlach 16 with and without a drop of water has left me bewildered. Worth the money - I don’t think so. Making the evening feel more special - neither that to be honest. Glendronach and such like Sherry casks expressions have left me wanting more, expecting more but discovering the same old drink that is harshly alcoholic and nothing to write home about. I think until you get levitating with the right creation - don’t praise your drink but simply sip it and keep searching.
I'm only at the beginning of my journey with whiskey, but this one is just perfect to explore complexity without going to extremes in any direction. Very enjoyable
As good as anything I've had
but "the beast of dufftown" ? not that beast-like to be honest.
I was given this as a gift and I really enjoyed it. Lots of body, flavour and complexity although perhaps just a touch expensive depending on where you buy it.
