Murray McDavid
Scotland
From Murray McDavid's Select Grain range comes a 19 year old single grain from the Loch Lomond distillery - one of the most adaptable distilleries in Scotland, capable of producing all manner of whisky styles. This one was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2017 after a finishing period in first-fill Koval Bourbon casks. Very intriguing...
Buttered crumpets, mixed peels, honey and freshly charred oak.
Spun sugar, chocolate-dipped strawberries, sponge cake - a delicious selection of dessert treats!
Slightly more savoury on the finish, with toasted cinnamon and thyme.
As the title says one of the best whisky's I've come across for £60 - after the first dram I find the flavour opens up even more, some amazing notes and a good solid finish.
A rather mild nose, followed by a confectionery flavour, tempered by a slightly sour and fresh notes perhaps influenced by the finishing cask. The age and (original) cask influence is apparent and welcome, but the marriage of flavours may be an acquired taste. Finish comparable to palate, not especially lasting but fading into a fresh sweetness that leaves a good impression.
