Highland Journey Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

Highland Journey is a blended malt Scotch whisky from Hunter Laing, the company started by Stewart Laing after he and his brother Fred Laing went their separate ways in 2013. This bold blended malt is made with whiskies from a selection of Highland distilleries, which have been matured in both American oak and Spanish Sherry casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Freshly baked brown bread, vanilla fudge, floral heather and red apple skin.

    Palate

Surprisingly sweet at first, with a big slice of lemon drizzle cake up front. It then swiftly develops bold, spicy notes of cinnamon and cracked black pepper.

    Finish

Medium length, with honey'd barley and crushed almonds.

    bad choice

I came all the way to here, just to warn you, it is not good. It is a very bad choice.

Solid value and a pleasurable winter dram

I usually explore new options and my local store, check reviews on anything I'm not familiar with, then make my purchase based on that. I've dropped some fair $ on expectations that usually lead to disappointments. I took a chance on this one and it's great for $49 CDN. The review below is spot on for all points. I do get ginger on the finish also, great value for the $, and a great holiday sipper that I feel will segue way nicely to more peated offerings (my favourite of all Scotches) Although I will pop a half spoonfull of Laphroaig 1/4 cask into a dram of this to experiment! Slainthé & Happy Holidays :)

Heather and moss like flora aroma, with cream soda and red fruits, followed by hay and barley. Like a malt milkshake when it hits the palate, with barley sugars and vanilla. Chopped hazelnuts in the end, and while the finish is quite brisk, the journey is definitely worth it (see what I did?) Coherent, well balanced blended malt. A fantastic one for beginners and a good intro to the highland style (minus the hints of peat). And for the price, excellent.
