Highland Park 21 Year Old 1996 (cask 12546) - Xtra Old Particular (Douglas Laing)
This is an independently bottled single malt, single cask whisky from the fantastic Highland Park distillery. It was distilled in Orkney in September 1996 before it was matured for 21 years in a single refill hogshead until the cask was cracked open and drained in June 2018 by Douglas Laing for its Xtra Old Particular range. Only 271 were bottles produced.
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Immediately charred wood on the nose developing to burnt buttered toast and citrus zest. The palate shows a slight earthiness with candied orange and warming spice (cinnamon), and the finish lingers beautifully with salted caramel, rock pools and home baking.
Nose
Heather-y smoke, ginger and waxy orange peel at first, followed by crushed black pepper and sea salt.
Palate
A plume of coastal air with touches of wood smoke initially, before dark fruits in syrup, soft nectarines and plenty of vanilla richness develop.
Finish
Hints of charred oak, cinnamon and liquorice root remain.
