Highland Park 15 Year Old 1996 - Old Malt Cask (Douglas Laing)
This is fifteen year old bottling of Highland Park from Douglas Laing's Old Malt Cask Range. The Orcadian distillery of Highland Park started life as an illicit still under the ownership of Magnus Eunson, a renowned smuggler. Legend has it that when Magnus heard that the Customs and Excise men were coming to get him, he threw a white cloth over a coffin lid on top of that day's distillate so when the officials came knocking at his door it looked like a funeral was in progress!
The Old Malt Cask range began as a release of fifty bottlings in 1998 to commemorate Douglas Laing's fiftieth anniversary. Today they offer many, many more. All bottlings in the range are non-chill filtered and contain no naughty colouring.
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose
Clover honey, barley and rolling smoke followed by herbaceous notes of thyme and oregano.
Palate
Peaty soil followed by acacia honey, toffee and basil.
Finish
The smoke drifts over an earthy floor before a final round of toffee flashes like a dying star.
Overall
Highland Park need I say more? Ok then, this is Highland Park expressed classically but with a slight twist. Earthy, smoky and honeyed just how we like it.
