Single Malt
10 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland Park distillery on Orkney, presented in the heavily-Viking-inspired livery that was launched in 2017. This expression is normally found on mainland Europe, but it seems that some bottles have landed on our shores (presumably on some sort of longboat, considering all the Viking imagery connected to it).
Subtle Sherry influence, but balanced by heather-y smoke.
Ginger and waxy orange peel. Earthy peat with a another hint of Sherry sweetness buried underneath.
Sea salt and heather once again. A few herbaceous hints of coriander leaf and crushed black pepper.
£12.05 - £129.49
I think I like this more than the 12 but not quite sure why. I like the saline element and the touch of smoke, tempered with a sweetness. It’s a little young but has something the 12 doesn’t that I can’t put my finger on.
Dunno why this 10 is more expensive than the “12” Note that according to the folk in the Highland Park Distillery, this 10 YO is not simply a younger 12, it is blended differently for those strange souls who like mixing malt Whisky into cocktails and the like. OK if that is your bag-but it ain’t mine !
Fantastic! One of the best malts I have ever tasted. It lingers upon the tongue spinning many more mysteries!
Tried 10 Yo and 12 Yo side by side in Kirkwall Hotel Whisky Bar. Noticeably different casking- not just an age difference. Much preferred the 12 to the 10, the latter tasting half-way to a Burbon to me. They also had the 15 Yo Cask Strength, @ £32 nip ! ( I bought a whole bottle for £230 at the HP Shop) and those were their cheap ones ! Some of the others would require a mortgage !
Relatively smooth but lacks any depth of taste. Rather than “peaty” it’s more compost. Bought for me as a gift but just can’t drink it.
