La Maison du Whisky's New Vibrations range is bolstered with this Tasmanian single malt from the Hellyers Road Distillery. Distilled in 2016, the peated single malt was aged in a single cask for six years before it was bottled at 67.7% ABV.
Precise, delicate. Floral (lily, iris), vanilla, herbaceous (alfalfa, hay), smoky, root-like (ginger) and empyreumatic (pellets, ashes), the first nose is also fruity (William pear) and licorice-like. On aeration, the aromatic palette reveals darker, oily (olive), camphorated, animal (bacon) and medicinal (sinapism) peat.
Clear, slender. Behind a gorgeous mineral reduction (schist, slate), the attack gives its own take on the animal character of the nose (bresaola, Grisons beef). The herbal mid-palate (nettle, peppermint) becomes lemony and milky (coconut, vanilla flan). The very end of the palate is infused (sage, lemongrass).
Long, distinguished. The earthy start of the finish (dried peat) brings to mind the harvest period (cut barley). In the after-taste, the same blocks of rich, oily and salty peat mix with the sweet wispy smoke of a Havana cigar.
