12-year-old Kilkerran single malt from Campbeltown's Glengyle Distillery, which reopened back in 2004. The Kilkerran 12 Year Old is lightly peated and non-chill filtered, and has been matured in a classic combination of bourbon casks sherry casks.
Oak notes are dominant, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat.
Initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed.
Velvet and smooth with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.

Fruity and delicately peated. Bottled at 46% but inoffensive, adding small drop of water releases some syroupy notes. Try it, highly recommended.
I'm no expert but I know what I like, and I like this a lot! I tend to go for classic peated Islay malts such as Ardbeg 10, but thought I'd try something different, and as I find most Speyside malts a bit too sweet for my taste, I bought this on a whim. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. To my uneducated palate it seems extremely well balanced, with a lovely butterscotch undercurrent. Buying another bottle immediately this one is finished, which won't be long.
A really thick, oily, silken feel to it; it reveals itself slowly, making it a dram to savour. It definitely tastes like a cousin of Springbank. From a freshly opened bottle my own tasting notes weren’t even close to the official guidance above: over-salted caramel, burnt bitter espresso, and blood orange zest. A really interesting dram!
This is a style of whisky that I really love. All serious whisky drinkers should give this a try. It loses a half star because in my opinion Springbank 10 is a little bit better. If you love Springbank you need to try this. Maybe you will like it more. Even if you agree with me it’s still more than worth it, considering how few Campbeltown whiskies there are
Kilkerran is a dream. The distillery have spent their money on the Whiskey, not the hype or promotion of it in packaging etc. It speaks for itself in every way. Ralfy has this one to a tee. It can be a go to dram after a hard day at work and sip it down to the last drop, just hoping for another sweet spot. It's 69 dollars here in Chicago, and a bargain unless your hung up on age statements and get to a comparison against other 12 year olds or long more for the 18's of which many are great (Glenlivet, Talasker, Highland Park, MacCallen etc) but oo la la, could drink this Kikerran every day and never get bored.
